One way or the other, we need to hear from Fbodfather or 80Zedder on this.

If there is only one plant producing GM vehicles in Feb, you better believe it will be Oshawa.
I agree!

I'll take the news as saving money now and the Camaro will begin production at the normal time, 16 Feb 09!

It's not like the test cars aren't built...6 a day for the last few weeks I beleive? They get the bugs worked out, make corrections on 16 Feb and start up slow and then build to normal production!

Now, had the article say "until further notice" instead of "first two weeks of Feb"...yeah, I would be worried!

I think GM needs to launch this car...it won't save them but it will start retruning money invested years ago ASAP! They may very well lower produciton numbers too but in the end, recoup the money in R&D and make alittle extra...that's better than losing all the R&D money and getting nothing in return!

The whole plant (there is more than one line) is not scheduled to be shut down the entire time. Every year they shut down for the holidays, and this year production is scheduled to be shut down longer in many NA plants, but Oshawa will not be completely down...My husband scheduled to return to work on Monday, Jan. 5th. Everyone needs to calm down. They are building them...Now as long as our government comes to their senses everything will be ok

Not to be disrespectful to anyone here....but...

I've been around for a while and have read hundreds (scratch that) prolly thousands of speculative posts. If there's one thing I've learned, it's to not get worked up UNLESS word comes from GM. So far, we've heard that everything has on schedule for the plant. If something comes up, GM won't want to talk about it unless it's actually going to affect the production date, etc. If and when that happens, you all know Scott will chime in with some info for us. So far, nothing has happened....which is a good thing.

By 'our' government, do you mean Ottawa or Washington. Because we don't quite have a government up here right now, and they aren't likely to accomplish anything anyway. If you mean Washington, the treasury department has said they will support the automakers.

Plants shut down all the time this time of year - I am 120 miles north of Detroit and this is common practice for them to do maintenace, etc...I am sure it is the same for GM/Canada.....plus with all the vacations it is more productive and cost affective for them to just shut down production lines......It is a little longer this year to their present state.....I am not worried about a shut down as this is somehting I have known for 20 years. My inlaws are Auto makers - But I am not a reliable source

Nevermind what I said earlier...it's not as normal as I thought.

This doesn't mean the Camaro will be delayed, though. Start of Regular Production (SORP) wasn't scheduled until the middle of Feburary anyways...

Sorry...By "our" government I was referring to the US. I am American, currently living mostly in Toronto...And I have been following the Canadian Government fiasco...trying to follow! As Americans we don't have a clue how the Canadian govenment is organized, so I have made a point since I have been here to pay attention. (I know there are some exceptions, but I taught social studies in the US and trust me the average American has no clue).

I am confident the US goverment will act, but the time between saying and doing has everyone a little on edge--at least those who realize what is at stake.

they sky is falling the sky is falling. . .guys and girls who honestly cares if this car is delayed for a week or two? seriously would you rather GM be in business 10 years from now producing the camaro still or would you rather then be producing a few and then go out of business. from a collectors stand point I'd want the last one to happen for the value of the car to sky rocket but for everyones sake and GM's I want them to survive. so who cares if it's delayed. they will still sell when they are finally produced.

but yea...off soap box.

The Camaro line is not affected. Quit worrying about it (for now).

GM Press Release

Quote:

GM Announces Significant Production Cuts for Q1 '09

DETROIT - General Motors announced today a significant reduction of planned production for the first quarter of 2009 due to the ongoing and severe drop in industry sales, which were down 36 percent in November overall and 41 percent for GM (2007 vs. 2008). The impact of these and recently announced actions to adjust production with market demand, will result in the temporary idling of approximately 30 percent of GM's North American assembly plant volume during the first quarter of 2009 and will remove approximately 250,000 units from production.

The speed and severity of the U.S. auto market's decline has been unprecedented in recent weeks as consumers reel from the collapse of the financial markets and the resulting lack of credit for vehicle financing.

The following U.S., Canada and Mexico operations impacted by today's announcement include:

U.S.:

Ft. Wayne (Ind.) - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Light Duty Regular and Extended Cab
Flint Assembly (Mich.) - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Heavy Duty Regular and Crew Cab & Medium Duty
Wentzville (Mo.) - Chevy Express, GMC Savanna
Lansing Delta Township (Mich.) - Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook
Pontiac Assembly (Mich.) - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Heavy Duty Extended Cab
Spring Hill (Tenn.) - Chevy Traverse
Fairfax Assembly (Kan.) - Chevrolet Malibu/Hybrid, Saturn Aura/Hybrid
Arlington Assembly (Texas) - Full Size SUVs: Chevy Suburban, Tahoe & Tahoe Hybrid, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL & Yukon Hybrid, Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV & Escalade Hybrid
Lansing Grand River (Mich.) - Cadillac STS & CTS
Orion (Mich.) - Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6
Detroit-Hamtramck (Mich.) - Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS
Shreveport (La.) - Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Hummer H3 & H3T
Bowling Green (Ky.) - Chevy Corvette, Cadillac XLR
Wilmington (Del.) - Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, Opel GT

Canada:

Oshawa Consolidated - Chevy Impala
Oshawa Truck - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Light Duty Extended and Crew Cab
CAMI - Chevy Equinox, Pontiac Torrent

Mexico:

Silao - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Light Duty Crew Cab, Chevy Avalanche, Cadillac Escalade EXT
Ramos 2 - Chevy HHR, Saturn VUE, Chevy Captiva
San Luis Potosi - Chevy Aveo, Pontiac G3
As a result of these assembly plant actions, GM will also continue to assess its powertrain and stamping capacity needs and make adjustments as appropriate.

General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), the world's largest automaker, has been the annual global industry sales leader for 77 years. Founded in 1908, GM today employs about 252,000 people around the world. With global headquarters in Detroit, GM manufactures its cars and trucks in 34 countries. In 2007, nearly 9.37 million GM cars and trucks were sold globally under the following brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, HUMMER, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Vauxhall and Wuling. GM's OnStar subsidiary is the industry leader in vehicle safety, security and information services. More information on GM can be found at www.gm.com.
