You can do one without a tune,won't hurt anything but the temp will swing alot in traffic but never run too hot.

A couple reasons why I have a 160 thermostat:
1. cooler/more stable coolant temps, the power delivery is much more consistent when ambient temperatures are high. 2. at least with my car, the factory thermostats tend to fail prematurely, and when they break, they break in the closed position. an aftermarket one will be more reliable and if broken, it will lock in the open position preventing your engine from overheating. its cheap insurance...
