If you think about the crankcase and the damaging combustion byproducts, you want the entire crankcase flushed. The valley cover draws the avpors from the center of the engine, so the entire drivers side bank stays stagnant. Fresh air enters the passenger side valve cover, travels around the rocker arms, down the pushrod valley, through the crankcase (and with the valley cover vent thats it...it exits there), then up the drivers side pushrod valley and around the rockerarms and out the drivers side valve cover giving a complete cross evacuation. So the drivers side valve cover is preffered, but GM designed the valley cover to try and reduce the oil ingestion so your fine with the valley, just the best is drivers side for the reasons listed.
