Just thought maybe I'd throw in my 2cents here as a current GTO owner and someone who certainly respects the heritage of the Camaro as well. Honestly, I don't know where I'll give the edge ultimately. From reports that are coming out the Camaro is going to weigh around 3900lbs+, the GTO is around 3750, BUT the Camaro will have the LS3 and the GTO has the LS2 (or LS1 in the case of the 04). I'd say no arguement over it beating the LS1 GTO (I'm talking stock on all of this for the record). The LS2 could certainly be a drivers race though with the new Camaro.
The advantages that I DO see the Camaro having is that their auto trans is 6 gears and the GTO autos only have 4, thats huge. Also, from the looks of things the Camaro will be coming with some bigger shoes in the back end and hopefully fix the wheel hop too. My GTO is on track to get bigger wheels in the back, because it should have had them from the beginning. Honestly, the GTO has gotten a bad wrap because it didn't look as Retro as other cars in its class I think. I like the subtly myself, not for everyone thought I'd imagine. I also like a car that is in your face and flashy too though. It'll be fun when the car comes out and I'm sitting at the line with one of you guys all lined up to get one for sure. |

The Camaro > GTO
The Camaro is faster lighter better looking more powerfull more equiped and hopefully more affordable The Camaro WILL BE my daily driver, but seeing as im only 19, i am more about performance than straight comfort. |

Overall expect the Camaro to be a slightly better performer, but not by too much. A lot of it will come down to whether the GTO has a better driver or not.
If it weren't for the Camaro I'd be looking for a slightly used LS2 GTO. Although I didn't like their styling when they first came out, I'm really starting to dig the understated, sleeper appeal. Either way it'll be fun to line up at a stoplight next to one and see both leave the Challenger in the dust (can't hate on the Mustang too much seeing as I drive one...).

I think the LS3 SS and GTO will be on par performance wise and will come down to a drivers race, other then that the GTO has an edge performance wise. The Camaro will have larger tires (thank god) but will not eliminate wheel hop and the 20s' will slow the car down and, IMO, make it harder to handle. Also the Camaro sits on the Zeta platform, which was built around that of the GTOs "pre" zeta platform, so its hard to tell which one will be better |

Hard to imagine an SS/RS LS3 Camaro being as cheap as a GTO.
I think the SS/RS will handle better then the GTO IMO. |

And the Camaros/Firebirds gave people an opportunity to drive a car with an LS1 at a lower price than the vette.

And yeah, I too believe the SS will out handle the GTO. The GTO was good, but the SS is much better designed and purpose built. The first drives have already proven that the V6 handles well. So hopefully the SS will only get better. |

The GTO is lighter, but the Camaro will handle better, has a better suspension, and I do like the look better. Also the Camaro will have a lot more options than the GTO, whose options consisted of color and transmission. The interior in the GTO was the best thing in a GM car for a decade but I will like the gadgetry of the Camaro more, especially the gauges....cars never have enough damn gauges, idiot lights are for idiots.

They weren't cheap when they first came out...The MSRP on mine was 32K...many dealers had substantial markups on top of that as well.

When I first looked at the GTO I loved the interior, but the exterior had an egg shape IMO. Decent looking, but NOT Muscle car at all.
If the SS/RS LS3 Camaro is $35k I WILL POOP MY PANTS. |

I actually bought mine preowned with 2250 miles from a cadillac dealer for 22,500. It was a trade in on a CTS they said and the previous owner needed a second set of doors. I got it in late 06. |

What would everyone pick between a camaro LT/RS or a GTO. This is my dilemma. I love how the camaro looks (agggressive) but than again the GTO has 400hp. I know by this time next year when i make a decision i can prolly get into a 06 GTO for about 16-18k which is not a bad deal. What does everyone think thanks.

That's tough. The GTO will give you near Camaro SS quality performance for less than V6 Camaro price. That is if our estimates are to be believed and the price you quote for used GTOs is accurate. But the GTO won't match the looks of the Camaro.
