After I had the engine replaced on my Chrysler I went and traded it in the day i got it back. Dealer tried to tell me it was worth 10k....I pulled up KBB, I have black book on my iphone, and the credit union I work at uses NADA. Come to find out, they low balled it because they didn't add AWD and a few other options and after showing them the 3 values I pulled up I ended up getting 13k for it without even trying to negotiate, I just showed them some simple numbers. I was going to try to milk them for another 1k cuz I told them I knew they were going to resell it for $17k plus but given the fact nobody there said anything about the replaced engine (which I paid $100.00 for; extended warranty) I decided not to push it. They were using NADA but if you put in the wrong options of course you're going to get the wrong value. Before you trade its always good to check as many sources as possible so you can figure out where the ridiculous offer they gave you came from.

I am currently in the auto business and I NEVER use KBB when I am appraising a vehicle. I use the auction reports. Appriasing a car is no different then having your home appraised, it's all about finding recent comparable sales in that market and seeing what they have sold for. The same way as a consumer I wouldn't pay more for a car than I know I could buy it for elsewhere, I won't do the same when I am buying a car from a customer as a trade in. Very simple process that doesn't require a whole lot of thought and no magic involved.

Well, KBB is right in saying that used camaros are worth almost the same if not more than new camaros. I have seen many news articles saying that a used camaro goes for 300-3000 over sticker price.
people want these cars and will pay. aside from that, the only time you use KBB these days is front yard sellers. The common person doesnt realize that KBB is worthless at a dealer... so they hold on to that value and expect it when they sell it in their yard.

Think KBB is bad? My state lets towns use NADA Guides to come up with fair market retail values and has got a figure $1,500 higher than I paid for the car 2 years ago.
I plan on fighting the taxes due. Have to request a hearing.

whats really funny is when they try to sell a 1995 v6 camaro with 150k then they put in the post KBB value is 8grand and im selling it for 6. But the real value is like 2300. I know that because my 98 z28 with 146k is only worth 3600 in mint. |

I buy and sell cars many times a year and I must be the only one that thinks KKB is pretty close in most cases. The problem is people don't know how to use it properly to get an accurate value. It works fine for me.

I have worked in the CAR buying/selling business for many years. DEALERS, AUCTIONS, etc., all use KBB, NADA, among other sources, to get the value of vehicles. Those values are updated all the time. Are they 100% accurate, probably not, but they are pretty close.

If you want to see the REAL value of what your car is worth on trade-in, go to Galves.com. You have to pay a subscription for a day, month or year, but it will give you an accurate value on what your cat is actually worth, not like the BS on Edmunds and KBB. You may be surprised!
