The only reason I put the the poll and asked the question was this, How many of us are truely able to afford the car and not let it go. We all know there are guys and gals out there that only buy something (or lease) because its a "status" thing. Once it gets old in their minds they sell or trade in.

For me, my wife gave me a few optioins. I can get the ZL-1 right now, but I have to get rid of my SS. I can also keep my SS and supercharger/cam it and not get a ZL-1. Third, I keep the SS the way it is, pay it off and then buy a ZL-1 used.

I know that there will be a lot of people that can afford the car and will dump it once they want something better or different. I know it's sneaky, but I'm kind of trying to get a feel of option 3. So I have a feeling that I'll have both in my garage in 2 years.

Not saying you need to drive another car in the price range to change your mind, but market experience and actual road experience are certainly worthwhile to consider.

The new gen GTO comes to mind. Many people, myself included, wrung our hands when it was first introduced in '05 wanting to get a new body muscle car which we hadn't seen since the camaro/trans am left us in 02. GTO had a LS1 in 05, and moved to an LS2 in 06/07, among other nice changes.

To me, buying a car without its production yet to experience the road IS a hype-buy. Sorry. I'm all about about research as well, but I still didn't buy my camaro until I had real-world feedback and experience to compare that research to.
Yes, a 2008 Toyota Highlander is the epitome of status symbols. I park it outside just so my neighbors can see my supreme status.

I bought it because I didn't want a 2007 - the 2008 was an updated model that was vastly improved. I had ruled out all other vehicles in the category for one reason or another (price, size, options, etc...). I was ready to buy in November right when the car was released because I wanted the car for winter. This was not a hype buy. I'm almost 97% sure.

The ZL1 is the same - I don't want any other car in the price range. Could I wait for 2013 to get real world feedback? Yes. Would I be allowed to test drive one? Doubtful. Would it change my mind anyway? No. So waiting would be a waste of my time.

Not a single thing Transformers related on my car and there won't be so long as I'm the owner of it.

I love Transformers, have since I was a kid and still have the toys. I saw all three movies in theaters (2 on opening day - last in a huge Camaro group because that was just fun).

I enjoy my Camaro (as I did my two Trans Ams and GTO before it)

I enjoy both separately and independently of each other and had I not owned the Camaro, would have still gone to see all 3.

CTS-V/SS

I would love to have a ZL1-not because of hype. My philosophy, you can never have too much HP-just too little traction. I have a CTS-V and a 2011 SS/vert now if I could just combine them? Wonder what kind of market there is for a Cadrolet SSV!

I believe the majority of the buyers (ZL1) on this forum, will be keeping
there cars for the next few years or more. For the first time buyers of a
5th gen camaro, its not exactly an impulse purchase. I've been waiting for this car for alot longer then just a few years, try maybe 20 years. The wife agreeing was never an issue, if I wanted a ZR1 she would approve it.
Came down to what I really wanted to drive and this is it.

I'm betting that in a year's time there will be plenty of pre-owned ZL1's available for those of us who were not ready to purchase new. Yeah, that's what I'm betting on......gotta be plenty of 'em just sitting on lots...at least $15K less than sticker.... trouble is, all the used ones for sale will have been thoroughly driven by the seller....kinda like buying a used dirt bike or 4WD Jeep.... and it'll be ready for a new set of tires by the time I can get my hands on one....think I'll start a separate savings account for ZL1 tires...... maybe in a year or two I'll be able to afford at least one or two Eagles...yeah, that's what I'm betting on.....

This will be my fourth muscle car... but first one to come with a supercharger or having a supercharger for that matter... so its something different... plus im building it the way i want it... rather then taking only what the dealer has

I don't know about some of you, but when I think of hype, I think of exaggerated claims causing everyone to go ga-ga about something only to find out that there's no substance behind any of it. But since the ZL1 delivers what was expected, I wouldn't call its pre-production attention hype. I'm not sure what it is if its not hype, but I wouldn't call it hype

I disagree because if that were true, Rally Yellow should be way more popular than it is -because of all these Transformers fans getting their very own bumble bee. But I think its usually near the bottom of the list. Why? Well, for one thing the target demographic for Transformers either can't drive or at least can't afford new cars. And I would imagine that there aren't too many parents that buy a car just because their kid wants it.

I'm thinking that way more potential buyers bought it because they saw it at autoshows, or read about it in magazines (or on the magazines website) than saw Transformers and headed off to a dealership to get one.

Let me preface this with this is my first "new" car purchase. It's always been my philosophy that if you want something to get it the way that you want it and not settle for less, that goes for everything I purchase. When the 5th gen Camaro was released I fell in love with it, a year or two later I was pleased to hear Camaro production had started again and what I saw was the base for the production vehicle. When the build your own came up on the chevy site I built it the way that I would want it and that totaled roughly $45,000. I've waited and waited and early last year I was able to increase my yearly income $10,000 to a point I can afford it and not "settle" for less by taking a new job. Then at the same time that raise occurred news of a Z28 was squashed and the ZL1 was introduced. Now anything I would have done to improve the SS I would now have and more in the ZL1. So I proceeded to wait for more news on the ZL1. Then more information was released and finally a price announced. Financial planning and the additional wait from getting the SS has allowed me to be able to purchase the ZL1. Additionally, I have been given a contingent offer for another position for an additional $10,000 a year. So as you can tell, this is not hype but a long awaited dream about to come true for me.

All I can say is good things come to those who wait. Also, if you can't afford it and want to, sometimes you have to change your source of income/situation, I tried twice to get paid what I was worth with the employer I had before I left that company. They had me doing additional duties with a promise of a raise, they even approved me for overtime which would have went away had I finished everything they were wanting me to do btw, I could no longer settle for the "promise" and if your facing that you don't have to either. Yeah I know the economy is bad but keep looking, the jobs are out there. I had applied for where I work now several times in the years prior to actually getting hired there.

Tons of research done before hand narrowed down my choice to the vehicles I purchased. I didn’t want to get a long-in-the-tooth version when the redesign would be released a few months later. I didn’t have to step foot in the car to know what I wanted and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase 5 years later.

For me, the same goes for the ZL1. I’ve narrowed it down beforehand. No test drive of any other car in the price range is going to change my mind.

same here!!!!

Yeah, and some of the differential lube and fluids is $100 a liter and you need liters of it. Crazy. Camaro ZL1 came out at the right time, My first American car will just happen to be the greatest American muscle car ever

I am hoping the maintenance will be more reasonable with the ZL1 with lots of Cadillac and Corvette parts along with the regular Camaros
