If they are doing the best job then yes that sounds about right. The best way is to totally sand down the pieces on which the stripe goes and repaint and clearcoat em. The other option, like people have said, is to rough up the clearcoat, paint over it, and then add another layer of clearcoat. The problem with this is that you get something called "clear edge". Basically the hood will look smooth but if you run your hand over it you will feel the difference between the 2 clearcoat layers.

Yeah, That is a very high price. That is a VERY easy paint job. Little prep and little work. Very small amount of product. When my car comes in, I am going to paint the stripes on myself so I will post up some DYI photos.

I have done a bit of paint work and I believe they mean that the stripes will be painted over the existing factory paint after the clear has been wet sanded to remove the shine and then the entire panel being the hood and trunk lid will have clear applied over it leaving only a very slight raised area where the paint is between the two coats of clear. This would be the right way to do this job since the factory clear would just be acting as an inner coat clear once the shine is removed. There is clear made for graphics that is meant to be applied as an inner coat clear which doesn't cure with a gloss finish so it doesn't have to be wet sanded to remove the shine and the graphics just get applied right over it. This would then be followed by either more inner coat clear and more graphics or a final clear depending on the job.

How about just taping it off and using RustOleum. I think a can of that and some
of that blue masking tape would be under $10.00.

Yeah, I'm waiting for the reports saying their stripes look like that from the guys who think it's so easy and go with the lowest bidder....that is if they have the nerve to report honestly.

Honestly...it is an easy job. You do get what you pay for but $2500 is way out there. Some people can paint and not lay out graphics. Some people are artists who can't lay down paint. Others have it all. For this job, you have to have a straight eye and basic painting skills.

so am i taking it that you think 800 to 1000 is to cheap to expect a good paint job? i havent talked to the body shop guy personally yet and from talking to steve he will have me come in before the car arrives and sit down and discuss it with him and get an idea what hes gonna do exactly to paint the stripes.

I don't think that is too cheap. That is about what it should cost.

What you say makes sense. Like any task, it seems hardest to the person that knows the least about it. And I suppose I don't have a lot of faith in the skills of the typical bodyshop worker, maybe an unfair stereotype, but based on my past experiences, as I've never had any work done that I could call "perfect", and I'd want nothing less for my new Camaro. Granted, if you find somebody with the skills, it shouldn't be a big deal.

I actually just got off the phone with 2 seperate Chevy Dealer bodyshops and was quoted $400-$600. I'm going this way. Practically the same price as the stickers, AND I can get my gloss black stripes instead of the matte finish!!!

not likely; they've been doing it for years.
Mine will be painted.
The Rustangs have them on the front and rear plastic fascias with no issues.
