This is why a qualified shop with the right equipment should always just pull the motor. Most shops with the right tools can pull the motor in no time at all. I wouldnt be as worried about the stock chain as I would be about the stock tensioner. Just dont ever install a underdrive crank pulley and I'm sure it will be fine.
BTW. What did it end up putting down and which cam did you end up with?

They might not have been comfortable doing the work so they told not to use it. Might have been a good thing and saved you trouble down the road.

If they only lowerd the oil pan slightly to remove the pump then they would be responsible for any later leaks. If they were to do it the right way and pull the pan completely out and change the seal there would be significantly more labor. I think they did the right thing and saved you some $.

My personal take is any time you go in the motor, you put in a new timing chain and aftermarket oil pump. Sure 99% of the time, the stock stuff is fine to reuse..but being in the other 1% sucks. Take it from someone who had their stock oil pump check valve stick shut and had to buy a new motor.
Every shop is different however..if it was not specifically on the build sheet/work order, I would just take it as is. Quote:

It seems that There is a big misconception that it is some kind of voodoo to change the oil pump in these cars. I don't get it..
I agree with Maryland Speed. We see no real reason to pull a motor just to change a cam. That seems like more labor than is really necessary, but if that's how they choose to do it than that's their choice. The oil pan just needs to be dropped a little, not removed. An experienced shop should be able to handle this in a very timely manner. If they seem to thing this is a big inconvenience, I would find another shop. |

its about 12 more bolts. its not that big of a deal. when i got to the oil pump, i seen almost no clearance to remove the bolt. then i take into account my luck, knowing if i drop the pan a little to get it out, id either drop the bolt into the pan (typical me) or it would go together flawlessly, and the oil pan gasket would leak.

I understand. I actually just referring to professional shops.
I've dropped a few oil pump bolts, but luckily they pan has a bit of a shelf to it and a extendable pin magnet makes it pretty easy to retrieve them. |

Almost every tensioner failure I have ever read about on a LS3 had a aftermarket UD crank pulley. Coincidence??? IDK?
I remember hearing something about the change in harmonics but then again I don't know for sure I just think it's better to be safe than sorry. At this point whats another 5RWHP anyway.
