Pirelli snow tires is how i go during winter, much softer rubber that doesn't get as hard in freezing temps. The stock tires get rock hard in cooler temps. Anything under 45 degrees, it's safer to run winter tires. The big difference in winter tires and all season is the rubber compound itself, plus the tread is better also.

Buy snow tires. The tallest, skinniest ones you can[/QUOTE] Good point, the smaller rim and narrower tires with the tallest sidewall is best!

The Camaro is an excellent winter driver, just get yourself some Blizzaks and you'll be set. if you have the SS RS, you may want to consider a second set of rims for those winter tires to be mounted to and use the 9"x20" rims on all 4 corners, not the staggered 8 front/9 back, that way you can get 4 of the same 275/40/20 tires and rotate when necessary.

I've driven my SS on the factory Pirellis at temps below -20F (Maine get's a little cold in the winter) and I managed to avoid all ditches I encountered. I don't recommend trying to drive the same way you can in the summer on them, but they are fine for normal driving...follow the speed limit and you'll be fine. If you include any form of precipitation at temperatures below freezing then you might have problems (rubber compound in P-Zeros will be very hard, very little tread depth, and a tire not designed to remove contaminants from the tread like all season tires are) If you're just driving the car once from Kansas to FL you'll be fine....if you're going to be operating it in KS on a regular basis and don't have a second vehicle to drive in the bad weather then Snow tires are a must.

Yes, you will die. If you don't you wish you were dead. Just look at the pic from the guy above my posting, the white Camaro with black hockey stick stripes. That poor car is doing all it can to go in a ditch and save itself a fate of rust, dings and a slow, steady death which is the mid-west winters.

Some of you guys are funny. The OP asked how the SS would handle the potential winter weather, not if he should drive the Camaro in the winter. Why it is that those of you who can use their Camaro as a weekend only car or summer only car must bash those of us who drive our cars all year is beyond me. Almost as bad as the SS guys hating on the V6 crowd. I wash mine at LEAST once a week to keep the salt off, and she's doing fine.
OP - As for driving on the Pirelli 20's in the winter? If it's dry, and you are CAREFUL, it will be passable to get you out of the cold weather. There's a higher chance of loosing control, but so long as you are not reckless, you should be OK. Having been in your other Camaro before should help you some, though, too oh, and FYI... you CAN fit 4 wheels/tires in the back seat and trunk... won't me much room left over, but they do fit. Don't ask me how I know, LOL |

Sorry didn't mean to offend you. You have enough issues being from Kearney, NE, where people from Fremont, NE think Kearney is " the sticks". I spent 9 months in Council Bluffs, IA, toughest 10yrs of my life.
And I didn't mean offense on the color of your car, it looks white given the grey/black ding of NE snow. And given the black crud on the side, the "sliver" contrasts as white better than that stuff you call snow out there. But you are right, it is just a car, not like it is a 2SS/RS convertible or anything nice like that. Thank you. |
