Listen to the voices of reason, wait.
And thanks for your service to keep us free, we REALLY appreciate the sacrifices that you, and all those who served before and will serve after do for us. AND to the families of those who serve, we salute you too> :flag2:

I, like everyone else in this thread, agree that you probably won't be able to afford the 2ss model. It's just a fact.

Of course I may be dumb, I see alot of lower enlisted driving new vettes.

I know that the army pay looks great to an 18 yo, but don't forget about taxes, sgli, ss, and medicare that's taken out. Also the army has a wonderful way of getting more money from you (socials, donations, tshirts, etc...).

PLUS...more than likely you will come from basic and AIT straight into a deploying unit. What are you going to do with your car? Leave it at on post storage

Do yourself a favor, hold off on teh Camaro. Buy yourself a used honda or vw (something with good resale value). When your unit comes up for deployment, save the hell out of your deployment pay and then come back and buy one for UNDER MSRP.

BTW: E2-E3 takes at least 4 months; E3 to E4 takes at least 6. This is with waivers, I only signed off on those I felt truly deserved a waiver.
Believe me, I KNOW!! I also know that the Armed Forces take financial responsibility VERY serious as has been mentioned here.

I have over 150 Officers and Enlisted that work for me and I have had to councel several individuals that have gotten in too deep financially. It's not just the young folks or enlisted that have troubles, all ranks and ages.

All I'm saying is for you 'Second2None' is to think long and hard about it. If I could go back and do it again, I would have saved all that cash I blew!!

Look bro I am one of those dirty officers (02) and i had way to many joes do this. It seems like you get a lot of money, because food and housing is taken care. If you really cant afford a 40k car, trust me. So many of soldiers did this crap and run into big problems. Chances are you will get done with basic your going to the sand box and the car will sit. You are better off seeing where you go after basic, and if you'll deploy, save your money now and save your money during deployment and order it 9-10 months out from coming home from deployment or come home and buy one off the lot. And you dont get promoted during basic, you come out of basic the same rank you went in, at least it was that way in 2004 when i went. list to some of these NCO's, theyre the ones that will be dealing with your situation when you cant handle it. Think if you get married or something and you cant buy a house because you have this car.

Been to the sandbox? If so I know you have seen the AFN commercial with the E6 betting his stripes at the poker table. Gosh I miss AFN.

I'm on the O side too.

Been there WAYYYY to often. Lucky thing for me is that I am 25000+ feet above the action. Tough for them to reach out and touch us up there. Got a staff job now, but you never know...looks like I will have to go for a year sometime soon.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies i appreciate them more than you know. About the E3-E4 rank thing, i'm just telling you what I was told by my recruiter. I was told i should get promoted to a E2 for sure, and an E3 within no time, and if i worked my ass off, E4 was within reach quickly.

The whole military/shipping off thing sort of jumped out at me, some of you may know what i'm talking about, most likely the enlisted guys. One minute youre worried about finals in high school, after school you mess around, just playing around, then before you know it you sit down and think 'I'm shipping off in a month'.

I'm not the sort to spend my money on junk, i doubt any of you will believe that though. Grew up in a small poor family that when you got some money, you saved it for something you seriously wanted. Plus i'm a hard worker, worked after school making 5.85 an hour for who knows how long, to buy a 1800 camaro that didin't run, then dropped 600 into it to get it running.

I agree that I should wait till after AIT and i get settled in at where ever i may be before i sit down with a dealer. That should be around next March or April, hopefully by then the prices may have dropped some. I'm good at saving up my money but i know i'll buy little things like food and gas and movie tickets and other crap that you never really NEED but you WANT haha.

Getting deployed to the 'sandbox' is alright with me. I didn't join the Army for the money, i wanted to be able to learn something that few people get to, and experience something different than the po-dunk town i live in, not to mention do my duty for this beautiful country. ;-)

I planned on living in the barrack, eating in the barrack when i could (though of course escaping on occasion for better food/ a change of food). I don't drink, i never have, i don't smoke, never have. so losing money because of an addiction won't happen. Saving as much as i can the whole time. 30 days vacation a year would be spent with my girlfriend during the summer (hopefully) in the home town, but for this i need a vehicle which hopefully by the time i get my vacation days, i will have. After the purchase of the 2010 i was going to save on for mods and have a small fund to help my brother build a high school car (most likely my 1984 Camaro Z).

But like i said i'm going to wait till a couple of months after AIT and see where i'm at before i make any big decisions, i wouldn't mind dropping a large (15-20k) down payment on the 2010 so my payments are smaller.

Just saw my first 2010 Camaro today btw. Yellow was all i could tell, we were in line at arby's and couldn't go chase it down without giving up our food. it didn't have the RS package that was for sure, or the 21" wheels. Might have been the V6

I'm ganna crash for tonight, thanks again for the replies! I'll check this in the morning and reply again then.

Again Thanks :-)

My names Casey by the way...

P.S. How much extra do you get from deployment pay? curious...

Just be sure to plan out all the finances and stick to your budget and you should be fine.

My family couldn't even afford milk some weeks for cereal when I was a kid so I understand the whole mentality of clinging onto cash when it comes in.

I used to iron my allowance money as a child. I treasured that green gold like nothing else... haha =)

Best of luck on your future purchase!

For deployment this is what you get, Im in the army, and just got back. You get 575 dollars a month extra, yeah big whoop. But that includes hazard pay, and few other things. But since you are not married you will miss out on 100 or 150 Seperation pay. So you will get about an extra 400 a month. You wont get federally taxed and depending on state hopefully not either, but they still take SS. Where you save money is not being at home spending it, but there are idiots out there that burn all their money on deployment at the PX or online. Overall this what I got a month, 575 extra money and by not being taxes probably took close to 900-1000 extra home. With your pay grade and what you get taxed you will probably see 600-700 extra month.

By the way,who is paying you for enlisting a friend? The government isn't.Congress would never approve of that.

Easy way to figure how much to spend on car if you have the average bills is easy.Half a yrs salary should equal the total amount financed,so to finance $40,000 you should be making close to $80,000 a yr.You will be making less than $20,000 so you should not finance more than $10,000.

Blue Joe,

There's a current enlistment program where you can get 2000 for getting someone to enlist. I believe it's called the every soldier a recruiter program.
