GM would be a better company had they not taken the bailout.. look at Ford, it's the best American company we have, they didn't sell out like Chrysler (which i'm glad they sold to the Italians, now they are going to build good cars) and they didn't hook the taxpayer on yet another government exhibition that will perpetually end up hurting all of us for the sake of a small group in Michigan.. |

Quick highjack based on the thread title - wonder if we could get a Fbodfather light to shine over detroit &/or a Fbodphone for emergencies? Maybe Commissioner Tran could get this for us?
However I'm sure he'd come for this thread. |

We are not having a political discussion in here. A lot of people have very strong and frequently uninformed perspectives on what happened with GM. Stop posting politics in here.

When he arrived at a VW dealer he told them everything on the list, the sales associate said they could do it all but the engine. He said that the US won't allow that engine to be used in the states because it's "Carbon Footprint". The way the states measure Carbon Footprint is clever. It measures it in a sense that a car getting 70mpg puts out more carbon than a car getting 20mpg BECAUSE it's measuring the carbon output via distance traveled per gallon. Basically the 70mpg car goes 70 miles on one gallon, therefore it's spreading more carbon on that gallon because it's traveling 70 miles. With the car getting 20mpg it's getting 20 miles on one gallon, therefore it's spreading "less" carbon per gallon because it's only traveling 20 miles. interesting heh? I have a problem understanding how they say a gallon of gas that weighs less than 8 pounds produces more than 12 pounds of CO2 in the atmosphere. How can anything weigh more after burning than before?

apparently i was mislead by a coworker and proven wrong, therefore i deleted my post to prevent confusion.
As far as the union receiving benefits in keeping the contract for a bailout i think i have to disagree. I'm not saying both sides didn't have interests in it however the uaw had to agree to a no strike clause for the current contract and the one ratified after the bailout. our schedule was also changed to a 3-2-120 where you have 2 shifts(one on the days the "a" & "b" don't overlap) work 10hours a day 4 days a week. Also wages dropped to 14.78/hour and your truck still costs 50k. Meanwhile a lot of the smaller shops that supplied the automakers with small orders did fall apart sadly. Just my .02 |

I didn't see the "Fbodfather Light" flashing! ![]() Anywhoo..... The last C6 Corvette will reside in the GM Heritage Collection -- We actually did sell quite a few cars from the Heritage Collection before going thru Bankruptcy. Had we gone Chapter 7 (Liquidation) -- I believe most of the cars and trucks would have been auctioned - some, on the other hand, would have been destroyed -- or - sold off as "objects of art" and modified so that they could never be driven. There are so many mis-understandings and falsehoods about the bankruptcy. One thing that's important to understand: Ford would have been in the same position as GM and Chrysler - save for the fact that back in 2005, their C.F.O. predicted that the housing bubble would eventually burst (...it did....) -- causing capital to freeze up (...it did.....) meaning that businesses could not raise money on the open market (...they couldn't....) -- and the Automotive Business is one of the most capital intensive businesses.......... So - Ford essentially mortgaged everything -- including the rights to the blue oval -- in order to generate cash - which they socked away - (I want to say north of 35 Billion....but I could be wrong about the amount...) -- and when no one could suddenly borrow money - they had that cash in the bank. GM and Chrysler did not - and thus had to borrow money from the Federal Government. In return, the Government received stock in the new companies. There are many Monday morning quarterbacks in this industry - the reality is that no one really knows what would have happened had GM and Chrysler gone out of business. My take? We lost many automotive suppliers -- many went chapter 7 (liquidation) and some went Chapter 11 (re-organization) - and that affected just about every automotive manufacturer worldwide. Had GM and Chrysler gone chapter 7 - I daresay it would have been a catastrophe -- no only for the Auto Industry - but for the rest of the economy. Now - all of what I've written here is my opinions - not necessarily that of the company for which I work......

But with luck, a collector (or group of collectors) with integrity would have bought up the museum pieces and taken care of them..... Let's make sure we keep this thread focused on the topic: that is what might have happened to the heritage center cars...and not the ins and outs of the bankruptcy. |
