interesting. I thought the instructions called to put the silicon on the spacer. Not that it's a huge difference I guess. I just thought the icolator holes were just a tad larger than the intake manifold holes, and you don't want to get any of the silicon to get into the heads. or are they an exact match?

Yup the iceolator is gasket matched so they are little bigger then the heads and manifold holes

Good question. We found that applying a thin coat of silicon on the manifold was better. This way there's not guess work that the seat of the manifold is covered. If you apply it to the ICEOlator ( which wouldnt be a issue unless you over applied), you could spread the silicon wider that needed.

The key is not to over apply silicon that when you quinch the manifold and the ICEOlator, you have spillage.

Yeah, I was surprised when my mechanic friend was applying that stuff how small an amount she used but she explained pretty much the same thing. I'm so glad I had her to help me as for sure I would have messed this one up by myself. I'm not a total mechanical idiot but this project was above my pay grade (as my military brat husband would say).
