Edmunds suggests GM could use BMW's passenger car diesels. That would sure save a lot of development costs and is pretty low risk in case diesels don't work out well in GM passenger cars.

I definitely think this is a HUGE mistake for GM.. Ford will laugh this up all the way to the bank if GM goes this route.. As I and many others who want to keep on buying American made products (including Canadian/Australian/Korean GM) I cannot and do not want to see American muscle turned into German elegance... For that I can buy a BMW M3... Stupid stupid stupid move..

I am a firm believer in the idea that GM should not have even considered this. The only possible advantage BMW has over GM in terms of Engine design is in the area of DOHC tech in V8s. In terms of 6cylinders GM's 3.6L, 3.0L SIDI are magnificent engines.. both very reliable and inexpensive to work on or modify. The 2.8L Turbo without Direct Injection almost equals BMW's 3.0L DI Turbo in the U.S stats.. and exceeds it in Europeean designation (Insignia OPC).

But I digresss.. The only reason why GM would have reason to use a BMW V8 over a GM LS OHV engine is for Cadillac. FOr some reason non-enthusiasts are under the impression that DOHC is superior to the "OLD" OHV design.. not realizing that OHV and OHC are both damn near the same age. GM has perfected, IMO, teh OHV engine... The LS3 and it's variants are some of the most powerful, certainly the most reliable, and efficient V8s on the planet. Fact is teh only manufacturer with a naturally aspirated DOHC design that exceeds GM's LS family's HP is Daimler-Benz. Why on earth they (GM or Benz) would be considering it is beyond me. I certainly don't want a BMW engine causing my Cadillacs to be in the shop 5 months out the year.:(

In 1998 I believe, BMW was in such straits that there was actual talk of GM buying them and making them a Division. In the End Ford BAILED them out by buying a money losing SUV company from them. Nissan was about $20Billion in debt and was "Merged" with Renault giving up 44% of its control and Chrysler was out and out Kidnapped, Raped, and Plundered... then Returned. GM actually went from being UNTOUCHABLE to teetering on the edge of Bankruptcy... while the POS company from Japan... Toyota surged ahead on LIES, Payola, and Propaganda. The late 1990s to now have been interesting.

From 1999:
Quote:
General Motors May Buy BMW

MUNICH, Germany (AP) -- General Motors will make an offer to buy Bavarian car
company BMW in the next few days, a German newspaper reported Saturday.

Rumors about BMW's future have been swirling since its chairman, Bernd
Pischetsrieder, resigned last Friday amid criticism of his handling of BMW's
British subsidiary, Rover.

BMW spokesman Joerg Dinner denied the report Saturday in Die Welt newspaper.

``BMW wants to stay independent,'' Dinner said, adding the main shareholder
Quandt family remained ``unbroken'' in its support of the company.

General Motors spokesman Dan Jankowski said, ``We wouldn't have any comment on
the rumor of the takeover.''

General Motors was one of the few companies that could afford BMW's price tag
of $7 billion to $9 billion, Die Welt noted.

The report comes one day after Der Spiegel newsmagazine reported Volkswagen
wanted its subsidiary Audi and BMW to take a 24.9 percent stake in each other.
VW would take over the ailing Rover plant in Britain as part of the deal.

BMW denied that report, too, though earlier acknowledged VW has long been
interested in acquiring at least a stake in the company.

BMW has invested more than $3.5 billion in Rover since buying it in 1994.
Analysts expect Rover to post a pretax loss of about $590 million for 1998

The above quote got lost in the shuffle, but is worth mentioning again...I believe this is where we're headed, as North American is way behind Europe in terms of diesel passenger cars, which are another step in the direction of efficiency. BMW has several variants of light duty diesels, so it would be smart money-wise for GM to simply glean the proven technology and apply it to the North American market...or for the global market, for that matter.

Man people need to chill. This happens all the time in the car industry. Just because GM starts buying engines doesn't mean the 2011 Camaro is gonna have a BMW V8 in it. They will buy engines in areas where their technology lacks, because its FAR cheaper and more cost effective especially for a small market segment, such as small displacement diesels.
