At better than age 40, I have to say this is very refreshing and encouraging to read. Perhaps the next gen has a clue about financial credit, debt and responsibility more than they are given credit for.

Congratulations and good for you that fall into this category, you MAY just restore the economy it appears some of my age group screwed up (possibly out of greed) after all !!!

For you that fall into the age group, but not the 'plan ahead' category, you might want to take a lesson form your peers.
22 Been saving up for years, gonna put over half down on my 2ss =)

Working graveyard, but I like the night.

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement!!

Personally, Im 23, and just graduated college as an Industrial / Automotive Designer.
Purchasing the Camaro entirely on my own, and DAMN PROUD OF IT!! My first new car !!
I have a full-time job as a consultant for a firm that does all of GM's CGI work for their website and print media.
On top of that, I run my own independent design company here in Detroit, working on everything from cars, buses, body kits, footwear, packaging, graphics, websites, product strategy, marketing strategy, etc etc.

Gotta work hard to play hard !!!

It's the libra in me- supposedly we're good with money (if you believe that astrology stuff).
Me, I'm going to work my ass off over these next couple of years taking any work I can get just to save up for this. Who knows, maybe I'll go ahead and buy a 2012 Camaro brand new. Maybe I'll just buy a used 2010 Camaro and call it a night.

But then there's insurance... Being 18 in a couple years, my rates will be fairly high...

I would hate to be a young adult growing up in these times. It is hard enough to save for cars and school. Then you have many job fields shrinking instead of growing, and the prices of houses in many places (especially NY Tri-State Area) are rediculous. You will be 38 by the time you can get your own house.

I bought my first house when I was only 21. I worked from the age of 13, full time from 18. Back then in 1991, it was only about $165,000 for my house, good luck finding a samll condo for that.

I think if I was that age, I would save my cash for a house and wait for later for the cars.

Own a $30,000.00 + car to sit in moms & dad's driverway..........nahhhhh.
Maybe not a smart as you say, Just my 2 cents.

38 and having your own house? I think thats a little ridiculous and it all depends on what field you get into.

I graduated with my MS in Accounting in May and just turned 23 on July 25th.

My black 1LT is scheduled to be produced the week of 8/24. On top of that, I'm expecting to close on a house in September. All I can say is that I'm beyond excited!

I completely agree with this statement. Its not as smart as you say it is to be this young and buying a $30-40,000 car. The only way its a smart decision is if you still have ~$20,000 sittin in the bank, and are able to still put a large down payment on your car.

Its not smart to strap yourselves down for the next 6 years with a car payment. That will put you behind later in life. You shouldn't finance a car for longer than 3 years.

Just my $.02 as well
