Yes, if you want flex fuel to work, you need the sensor, install it, wire it, and enable it in the tune and then tune for it.

What I'm unclear on is - put in a tank of E85 and optimize the tune for that. Then if you have a tank of 91 octane, can you tune for that too without messing up the E85 tune >> resulting in having the best of both worlds? Is that possible?

I think to an extent it's possible to account for so much yes others will confirm in my case I would like sensor just incase I don't feel like driving across town to get corn then I could just add some 91 or 93 to what I have and cruise on it

Yes, that is what flex fuel does. You have an E100 map, and an E0 map. Sensor detects the E percentage and interpolates between the 2 maps. So you can run anywhere from 0 to 100% ethanol and the tune is spot on assume whoever tuned it knew what they were doing.

Correct, the flex fuel kit dave makes is awesome. I put e85 in all summer long. The tune automatically adjust for the e85 and increases the timing. If I'm just going to be driving the car around I just put in 93 octane. The sensor reads the current mix and adjust the timing accordingly.

Does anything in-between need to be tuned? Like E25, E50 or E75 tables? Or just the E100 and an E0?

ECU does it all inbetween. You tune E0 and E100, and let it go. It has the tables to adjust anywhere inbetween.

And in reality, you just tune the airflow/etc, and car adjust automatically because it knows the target stoich for E0 to E100. It then has a base timing table for no ethanol, and one for 100% and interpolates between the timing maps. So if you have +6 degrees of timing on the E100 map, you would get +3 degrees with E50.

E85 Fuel Mileage

Well I can tell you from personal experience that I burn TWICE the amount of fuel on my E85 setup than I did on the 93 octane setup. I currently get 6-7 MPG with E85 and with 93 I was getting 12-13 MPG. Since E85 prices where I am at are about HALF the 93 prices though, the cost to operate is about the same. Basically I can go about 120 miles on a tank of E85.

It really shouldn't be that much difference maybe the tuning is not quite dialed in on E-85

I recently ran a mileage test on an 850 RWHP ZL-1 we built and it got 23 mpg highway on pump gas and 20 mpg on E-85.

Ted.

Actually the Tuning is PERFECT. It was done by Sam Miller of ADVANCEDMODERNPERFORMANCE.com out of Arlington Texas. Now I have no doubt that he has richened up the air fuel ratio some because I can break a hammer in a sand box (LOL). I also am running a large boosted cam and 3.91 gears with a six speed.

Well I can tell you from my personal experience that you will burn MORE than 30% fuel compared to 93. If the old mileage computer if is correct on my 2010 I get an average of about 6.5 MPG on E85.

Of course i have a triple FORE system and run about 21 pounds of boost which results in 1015 RWHP so to me, I am happy with that. Having said that, I didnt expect the mileage to be that low but I just dont give a shit frankly.

We were debating on using a dual or triple pump system but at these power levels using E85, it is a requirement. ON the good side of this I am able to safely run 18 degrees of timing but I also have methanol injection that helps with that as well.

I have one of Dave Steck E85 kits and its amazing! Occasionally it seems temperamental but if you look at the logs from HPT, you can easily see how much better it is. Go E85 and don't look back..... the price tag is the downfall at first, but it will be worth it in the long run.
