Sounds to me if they are going to train you they normally are not planning to let you go.
You sound motivated and I don't think asking for help in your job when you don't know is a bad thing upon. Being in the building industry I think you are doing the right things....
Besides - Talk to your boss about long term plans...He probably wants to know your goals and plans as well.

and............Damn thats a lot of shoes

I think the only solid advice applicable in your situation would be to take into consideration your worst case scenario, and plan and work toward the most likely scenario.

Even if you aren't being paid, it still costs your company money to send you through 3 months of training. I doubt they will do that, then let you go. If you are really worried about it, go talk to your boss (or your boss's boss or whoever makes the decisions where you work) and tell them that you are concerned about being laid off and ask how likely it is. It never hurts to show your boss that you care about keeping your job.

I just found out today at my job that i'm starting an intense training on monday working m-f 8am-4pm for the next 90 days. I've been there 1.5 years with no prior experience in this field. I have been going to school full time since i started because that was a condition of the job. I am an electrical and instrumentation trainee. I have been on nights by myself for the last month and a half-two months. I had a few problems because some equipment i had not previously worked on quit working and had to call my boss in the middle of the night to ask how to i fix it. I didnt want to have to call but i didnt want the downtime to be any longer than it has to be. I havent had any real training since i've been there, i mostly did projects and wired up motors when i was on day shift, I never had any troubleshooting experience training or PLC training. My boss even told me on one of the things that I didnt have the experience to know where to begin with one of the things.

My question is should I just start trying to sell my camaro now? I know they will pay for 9 months if you lose your job but i dont know how hard it is to get that. I know that I will quit buying anything unnecessary to try and save up as much as i can in the next 90 days. I have another car but it has 173k miles on it, so i dont know if its worth trying to sell it when i cant get that much out of it. I have been trying to sell some of my shoes that i've collected over the years because i have many that are brand new that are worth more than i paid for them now.

Sorry for the long read but any advice will be appreciated

also i'm about half way done with my AA in the electrical program i've been doing for the last 1.5 years. so i dont know if i should just sell and try to finish school or what. Thanks again

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the replies here it is in short(well shorter)
-I already have my camaro(dont want to lose it)
-been at my job for 1.5 years
-Was told i'm being given 90 days to get up to where i need to be at my job
-the training will be paid
-I have money in the bank (enough for 6 months of payments)
-I know how to do many things at my job just certain equipment i've never worked on
-I have had some training at the job but mostly i did easy stuff and projects (tearing out cabinets, running cable, hanging lights, etc...)
But since i've been on nights by myself there have been things that broke down that i didnt know how to troubleshoot
BUCK UP,

J- It sounds like you are very responsible and want to do the right thing. Here's what I would suggest, take the training and give it your very best. Read, research, go above and beyond your boss's expectations. Get the highest grades/marks you can in the training. Maybe even offer to go in during the days or the weekends to observe/learn from those that are more experienced that can show you the equipment that you lack experience with???

Your boss is bound to be at least a little impressed by your initiative if you do those things. If after the training you still can't meet his expectations then you may need to ask yourself whether the field is really right for you or if you are better off pursuing other options???

You could always make a new post, using a picture of a pretty girl as an avatar and relive your daily dilemna out on this public forum making numerous posts. I hear that works pretty good Just kidding of course!

Good luck to you. Really your best source of good advice will probably be your close friends and family and those that are a little closer to the situation than a bunch of strangers here. Good luck though. No one wants to see you lose your beautiful car :(. Let us know how it turns out.....and oh, yes, sell some of those shoes! You aren't trying to compete with your wife or girlfriend are you??? LOL

I think you need to take initiative and learn your job. They are sending you to training to help you, but you will need to put in the effort to learn and develop. Your boss is trying to ask you if it is worth his time and money to train you based on your goals.

Spend your energy learning and not worrying. You might want to limit your time on this site while training. The time you spend here could be time studying. If the job is worth keeping then "man up" and become a model employee.

Otherwise, use the training time to find other employment.

I guess it all depends.... if you have an SS with the current reductions in availability, act like the shady dealers and SELL SELL SELL at 10K more than you paid!!!!! Other than that, do what you can to learn your equipment at your job, as my experiance goes......if you are makeing the effort to improve you are more valuable than the others who just get by and "think" they know enough!! Effort is worth more than you think!!

Concentrate on the training that you will be doing...learn what you need to learn...positive thinking.......enjoy your car...you are NOT going to be let go.

Why would they bother "training you" if they were gonna fire you in 3 months?

I don't know you but I'll give you a bit of advice - consider it a smorgasbord -- take what you want - and this is not necessarily directed at you, per se -- hopefully some others who are concerned as they start out will see this and perhaps benefit.

First -- I think you DO care about your job. That's important. If I have someone working for me that does not care about the job, it becomes VERY obvious -- and quite quickly I might add...

You are asked to go thru an intensive training program - so PAY ATTENTION. I know that sounds like something obvious - but you'd be surprised how people tend to let their minds wander. IMPORTANT: GET LOTS OF SLEEP....and eat right -- knock off the carbs esp. at lunch. Yes, this is important. Most people (including yours truly) do not get enough sleep and it shows -- you cannot concentrate -- Carbs will put you into an 'after-lunch' slump......this is critical as you go thru training.....you can take a breather after you get thru the training.......GET LOTS OF SLEEP.

Pay attention to details! A favorite of mine: I put a sheet of paper on the floor between me and the door where the candidate will enter the room. If he/she picks it up, they get points. (they are looking at details) If they ignore it, I ask myself "why didn't they notice it - or if they did notice it, why didn't they pick it up?"

How's your handwriting? If I can't read your writing, I could make a mistake that could cost the company a lot of money!

Pay attention to your diction. If you're talking and using slang and I can't understand you -- or if you stand out in a bad way, I'm going to notice.

I would not sell your Camaro -- esp. because your other vehicle has high mileage -- what happens if it breaks down and you can't get to work?

...and speaking of that: When I went to work for Chevy 30+ years ago, we had a rule: If you start at 8am and you show up at 7:45, you're late! (because it takes a few minutes to get situated......)
Moreover: don't be late. I don't care if you have to buy 10 alarm clocks! DO NOT BE LATE! You want to see the Fbodfather go crazy? Walk into a meeting late - or walk in and not be prepared. Being late or not being prepared is essentially saying to everyone else: "you are not important to me!"

Set yourself apart from the crowd -- develop a great work ethic and you will go far -- because I'm here to tell you that the work ethic these days is pitiful.

I wish you the best!

(....and it doesn't hurt to ask the guy upstairs for His guidance......he's never let me down! Never!)

Question: why do you need all of those shoes??? I know that's a personal question -- and I have no idea of how old you are --but I do think you need to set your priorities and some short and long-term goals. If not, you might wake up one day at 30 and find that you are basically nowhere in life...........and that is tragic!

And the shoes thing brings one last thing to mind: Your appearance. Don't try to make a 'statement' with your clothes when you come to work....they should be clean and well presented. You can have old clothes -- but they need to be clean. How are your fingernails? How does your hair look? I don't care if you're cleaning out a septic tank for a living -- when you first come to work in the morning, you should be presentable.

Good luck! Please let me know how you're doing. I care.

Study your @ss off, keep the car, keep the shoes, stop buying things, keep your job.

Deal with things as they come, don't sit there and worry about what has not happened.

They want to keep you or they wouldn't spring for the training.

dont know if anyone will care but thought i'd share anyways. My new supervisor today talked to me about enrolling in school again next quarter. She said that unless i just give up basically i will not be losing my job. They have deffinitely noticed a big improvement. I was very excited when she told me. The other guy that was my boss until the new supervisor got hired said the same thing about noticing the improvement.

I agree. You should take the training and take it as a very big commitment they made to you and be thankful they have that kind of faith in you and you pay them back by studying and working as hard as possible to learn as much as you can in the training.

You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders. Put your mind to it and you will do well and you will go places in your career.
