I have had 3 supercharged cars and have a total of probably 120,000 miles on the 3 cars. I never had a catch can on the first 2 and probably still would not have one if I didn't have excess crankcase pressure on my highly boosted motor. I kind of think the cans draw out more gunk than passes the standard pcv which makes it look very important. The supercharger has been on and off my ZL1 many times with no indication there is any gunk getting on it at all. I kind of think it just gives you something else you have to watch. I suspect if you put 100,000+ miles on the engine and supercharger you would have some discoloration in the supercharger from the recycling of oil vapors but in the absence of another problem I don't think it will affect performance much. I honestly go through a lot of cars and engines and don't see me ever owning anything long enough that that can is going to make a difference. That is my opinion. If I thought I would keep the car until I die it would probably be a good idea. I don't think I have ever had a car more than 5 or 6 years.
+1

I have one and it dose work. If you plan on keeping your car forever then put one on to keep the blow-by oil from building up carbon deposit on your cylinder heads. If your going to sell your car within the next 5 years...don't worry about it.

Curious how many people have NOT installed catch can's on their ZL1s. Any issues?
I'm Presently Not Running A Catch-Can On My Car - I Only Have Around 2800 Miles On Her - From What I've Read And Seen, I Think I'll Be Putting One On Her - There Is Definitely Some Oil Blow-By As I've Seen From My Buddy's Cars With Catch-Cans

The factory has a 100,000 mile warranty on these motors. If they felt a catch can was important to get to 100,000 miles don't you think it would be there? I for one will not be using one. I am sure they work. Are they needed? I'm not so sure of that.

I don't really think it affects the longevity as much as it just keeps the intake free of oil... Less for me to have to clean. That by itself is worth it for me.

On the other hand, if they were OEM, they would likely get filled up from neglect by the everyday buyer and dump oil back into the engine. Without one, dealers can charge a few hundred bucks for an intake system cleaning every 40-50k miles or so.

We are talking about a 200 dollar(expensive side) mod for a 60k+ car. Even is it isn't 100% proven to be needed, for 200 dollars (or less) I would think you just do it.

It's not the $200. I just don't want extra clutter in the engine compartment. Especially for something not proven to be needed. The internet is a funny thing. It's like how can you drive your car without a catch can??? OMG!!!!! Your neglecting it!!!!

They do catch the oil and they do look nice! Is it absolutely needed, well that will always be debated.

Here's an easy test....

Remove the intake housing going to your TB and take a look or swipe a rag around the TB. If you see small amounts of oil then you know what the catch can catches.

Simple enough.

For everyone running a catch can. Are you guys running a 2 port or 3 port? Pros cons of each? What do you recommend??? 3 port has lines to the inlet and outlet and the third one I believe is ran to the intake

4 SC cars before the ZL1. 1 has over 3000,000 miles and never had a problem, Yes there is oil film in the intake but it gets burned. 197,000 miles on #2 car and 78,000 miles on #3 car. #4 is a GT500 that is run hard with 48,000 miles. Did a blower swap this winter and old blower looked new inside. Oil changes on all these cars is at 3000 miles and all but the GT500 have Delo 400 15/40 in them Hi detergent which caries away all deposits. Never had any sludge buildup in any of them.
As for is the catch can worth it? if it makes you feel better then yes it is. it has yet to prove it is needed to improve engine performance or longevity to me. Before and after dyno tests show no differance. I for 1 like a clean engine compartment. not looking for show under the hood, I will save that for the outside of the car.

That's not even a pic of a ZL1 blower. That pic has been on every forum out there.
