Anyone NOT run with a catch can?

I'm new to owning a supercharged car. Every time a catch can comes up in this forum, which is a LOT, says - it's a MUST have, and the sooner the better.

Curious how many people have NOT installed catch can's on their ZL1s. Any issues?

Well, I'm not.....yet as I just bought my 2015 ZL1 this past Sunday. I do have one on order and a Rotofab CAI as they are the two must haves per fellow ZL1 owners here. These will probably be the only mods I add as this is my daily driver.

I haven't installed one on mine yet, I only have 2,770 miles but I am on the fence about it. Of course no issues, its a brand new car lol.

Contrary to what your asking, I do have one. Needing one, not needing one, I couldn't say. The pictures I've seen though do speak for themselves. I empty it at every oil change and usually remove about 1/4 of a cup.

I didn't have one until I blew a rear seal. I kind of think it really isn't that big of a deal for the car to burn that gunk and you have to run a lot of oil through your supercharger before it affects the performance. I have had 3 supercharged cars and have a total of probably 120,000 miles on the 3 cars. I never had a catch can on the first 2 and probably still would not have one if I didn't have excess crankcase pressure on my highly boosted motor. I kind of think the cans draw out more gunk than passes the standard pcv which makes it look very important. The supercharger has been on and off my ZL1 many times with no indication there is any gunk getting on it at all. I kind of think it just gives you something else you have to watch. I suspect if you put 100,000+ miles on the engine and supercharger you would have some discoloration in the supercharger from the recycling of oil vapors but in the absence of another problem I don't think it will affect performance much. I honestly go through a lot of cars and engines and don't see me ever owning anything long enough that that can is going to make a difference. That is my opinion. If I thought I would keep the car until I die it would probably be a good idea. I don't think I have ever had a car more than 5 or 6 years.

This post w/pic of a ZL1 blower is from Rx in one of the catch can threads, so it may be just a little embellished. They were, after all, in the business of selling catch cans.

I've owned a dozen or supercharged vehicles and I have NEVER ran a catch can. IMHO, they are a waste of money and do nothing to add to the longevity the drivetrain. Cars that come from the factory with a supercharged engine are engineered for them. I would not say the same holds true for cars that came with n/a engines and where an aftermarket supercharger was added.

Yeah I've seen those photos but I have never seen a cooling brick like that. I suspect that engine had some other problems...

I don't have one. Will it void the warranty?

Catch cans are not snake oil guys.. They truly work and do exactly as they are supposed to do. May be hard to take my word, being that I'm a vendor, but if you have seen some of the gunk/buildup we've seen you would be a believer. There's a reason we include them in all of our packages and use them on our personal cars.

Best regards,

Tyler
