I've noticed new Vettes have gone to the PF-64. Makes you wonder how many have been tracked already with the small filter. Especially with heavier oil, the larger the filter the better to keep up with the pump volume. |

I haven't compared the 48 to a 64, but there must be enough of a capacity difference for them to recommend it in the track prep doc. |

I would think The smaller filter would bypass quicker during constant high rpm driving. I believe also that bypass valve is located within the filter acording to the ls7 istallation manual. The pump has a pressure relief so it would not over pressure the filter."Normally" So maybe "just a guess" larger filter media is required when using 15w50 & high rpm to have a larger percentage of filtered oil. Twenty years ago we would remote mount the filter away from the engine and remove the oil filter bypass valve. This Would allow us to use a larger filter or two tandem filters to gain 100% oil filtration. Also kept the temp@ 10 deg cooler.

Yeah, I'm not sure the description they told me for why is very accurate. But more so, bigger is better for racing.
For my race cars I've always used the biggest WIX racing filter I can use. I know the racing filters don't filter down to the small micron. But they don't bypass or restrict as easy. With a BBC drag motor, with a huge Hastings filter (non racing) I was visibly seeing a lot of metal in the oil. Oil was bedazzled sparkly. Using a huge WIX Racing filter, clear green oil (Brad Penn green stuff). So I know the filter makes a huge diff in racing. I thought I was doing great with what I thought was a real good filter... it was too good. Either a restriction or bypassing too much. I think for racing, it's not the microns you're worried about, it's the starvation or bypassing. The sweet spot for my drag car turned out to be 15w50 semi synthic high zinc racing oil, and a huge Wix racing filter. Wear problems are gone with that combo. |

You all think the uph48r would be good to use in a ls3 instead of the regular 48?

I don't see why it would be of any benefit, nor would it hurt anything. Supposedly the only difference is the thicker case. Even the first few years of the LS7 used the PF48 with no ill-effect.

I ran one a couple years ago. I didn't notice a difference. Oil pressure was same too.

Like it all you want, put a PF-64 on the Z/28 and be confident the GM rep will be happy if your motor takes a dump during the first 3/36,000.
