I still don't get how everytime someone brings up painting the rotor hats that rust, some people actually think we mean painting the braking surface [/QUOTE]

But, wouldnt painting the brake surface actually give you better stopping power?!?! LOL

Also, should I paint the middle part where the bolts are/where the rims sits or no?

I had some rust developing on my rotor hats also. I just used some steel wool and the rust just disappeared. If it gets really bad I may paint them. For now the steel wool works

I would not paint that part. A buddy of mine had his wheels powder coated on his Corvette. We were doing a HPDE weekend and it was +90 degrees out not to mention the heat build up we were getting on the brakes. What happened to him was his rotors/hats had heated up enough to melt the paint on the back side of the wheel where it contacts the hat. That caused the wheels to loosen up on him to the point he noticed it on the track. We popped one of the fronts off and could see where the paint had just melted and exposed the bare metal on the wheel. The wheels were torqued before hitting the track, the fact the paint melted and essentially created a gap between the rotor and wheel was concerning. I was actually surprised the powder coater did that knowing these were going on a car that was tracked.

No I was talking about the visible part originally. But Bannonm answered the question just like I heard before the paint might cause problems where the rims go on

I could think of 128 other things to spend 8 hours and $30...but that's just me.

If the rust really bothers you...remove rotor, clean with brakekleen, dry, submerge and soak rotor in phosphoric acid, remove after an hour, wash well Dawn and nylon brush... compressed air to dry then oven at 300 for an hour to dry...mask areas off...hi temp zinc phosphate or hi temp galvanize primer, oven dry at 250 for an hour, top final coat...another hour at 250. Let cool...

I'm just gonna hit it with some scotch brite pad and a couple layers of paint while I'm doing my calipers. 20 minutes extra idk what you're talking about 8 hours

I may try this myself. Aren't there different grades or level of abrasiveness with steel wool? If so, which did you use? After you finished, did you just wipe the hats off with a towel or something?

That's what I did when I painted my calipers. The rotor hats were rusting and it was looking pretty ugly. I knocked off as much of the rust as possible, then hit them with high temp primer, followed up with some VHT silver. I am thinking that eventually the rust will come through again, but, once the wheels are off, it only takes about 20 minutes to re-paint them.
