Dude, I feel ya... except I don't have all the bells and whistles and dic indicators etc. Just a little red airbag light. I've learned to live with it... for now. Its just a little airbag light in mine. If mine did what yours is doing, I would have already fixed it.

Yep, a few weeks ago it came on. Nothing, just the light for no reason at all. It hasn't been annoying or anything like yours except for it being there, which is on a level of annoyance as well... maybe its not blasting me because mine's a 2010. Maybe just a different issue...

1400 though?? Dang...

Because SOME dealers are actually quite skilled and know these cars, instead of some dude who hasn't been to any training in years who you pay to "figure out" how it works. Hell, the independents around here are just as much- and take longer.

most scanners don't read airbag codes.

At a min, you should have had it written up exactly what the problem was. The exact code, etc. That's bullshit.

If you get the code, it should be fairly easy to fix. then if you have a scanner that does airbags, you replace whatever is the bad part and reset the code. I done it several times on other cars. No you don't need to reprogram the SDM.

GM customer care read those post and help your customer with a safety issue that's been been known for a few years already.

My passenger air bag recently started malfunctioning. Did a lot of online research (most of it here on C5), and was pretty sure that it was a malfunctioning PPS (passenger Presence sensor). Many have reported a repair cost of $700... even as high as $800.

I took it to Crest Chevrolet in San Bernardino, CA. The estimate for the estimate (yep: They estimated $104 to look at the car to estimate what the repair cost would be) was bad enough... and I braced myself for an $800 stunner.

Instead, it came to $1400. Now, for $104, you don't even get a written breakdown... you get a gum- popping receptionist who gives a verbal estimate only, when she tells ya, "It'll be $1400 if you want it fixed." That's all. You then pay your $104 for the service, and you go home to curl up in the fetal position and cry.

What. The. Hell.

This seems to be a common problem in these cars... but it's not a recall item. GM won't help you out... if you don't have the money, and a Mack truck crosses the double- yellow, your passenger is going to face- plant without a pillow. And $1400 is a ridiculous, obscene, crazy number for something that is clearly a manufacturer defect, since I have certainly done nothing to the air bag system to have caused its untimely failure.

Not pleased today. Can't even drive the car, because in addition to the red lights on the dash, the warnings on the DIC, and the flashing on/ off indicator, there's an audible chime that alerts you, about once per minute, that there's a problem with the air bags. You can't ignore it... that sound will make you utterly insane. So, I can either pony up $1400 for a manufacturer defect... or I can park this f'n car. Great selection of choices.
A small recommendation:

Do not ever do business with a repair shop that charges you for an estimate. I work for a fairly large contractor - estimates are free to the customer. It is a cost of doing business.

Read the warranty on airbags.

None of the various shops that I used for my car related work... NONE of them charge anything to diagnose a problem. I even had one vehicle giving me major issues that were intermittent... So the shop kept the car for a week and kept trying to duplicate (until they finally did). They then informed me of the issue and the cost to repair. I could have taken the car at that point, no fee paid at all. Do Not Pay for an Estimate!

That pad in the seat rips on the plastic clips that attach to seat. That's what PIO241 says.very common on camaro, traverse ,Acadia ,and enclave.

The final chapter:

Rotolo has completed the repairs. The bill there was $905... still a chunk of change, but when you consider that Crest wanted to shake me down for $1400, I figure I'm $500 wealthier for getting a second opinion.

Crest had said that both my PPS and SDM were bad: I was skeptical that BOTH had failed simultaneously. Rotolo confirmed that my SDM was fine... only the PPS needed to be replaced. So, Crest can SMD!!!

I did get some help from a member here on C5, who sort of wants to stay anonymous. The member helped me out IMMENSELY by offering me guidance regarding who to talk to at Rotolo, somebody who was very helpful, very concerned, and, clearly, saved me $500.

I'm really glad to be back in my Camaro. The rental I was in during the repair was a Chevy Spark, and, yes, that really, truly was the most badass car on the rental lot that day. I know it's great on gas, and fits into tiny little parking spaces, but I still felt as though all of my dignity stayed back with the Camaro... I had none tooling around in the itty bitty econoshoebox. But, it got me home, got me to work, and got me back to the shop the next day.
