I'm glad to see that it's not just me then. Still no replies from a dealer or GM insider though, anyone out there who can make an informed comment on the cause?

I have a SS/RS & I have the same problem when I am taking off from an incline. I don't seem to have a problem when backing up. I have other manual cars without this problem. In fact I also have an 09 ZR1 & a 08 Viper ACR with no problem. |

The smell is no big deal. I'm sure it will go away as the top 'new' layer goes away. It's not something that would every make me want an automatic.
Manual transmission is meant for a true American sports car. Automatic transmission is...for a soccer mom in a minivan! Anyone can drive an automatic well. When people look into my car and see a manual transmission, they look wide eyed and just smile and say...'oh yeah'. You'll never get response that with an automatic, rather they will say, 'hmmm I see you went with the automatic...does your wife drive it?'

I've noticed the same thing. I thought I was just being too easy on the clutch and slipping it too much. Its been a few years since I've drove a stick. I'm at 3000 miles now and still getting it. I was just hoping its the new burning off. So how long is this clutch gonna last? I sure hope the dealer will put in a new one if it goes out before the 5 year mark!!!

Your going to have a blast getting a GM to replace a clutch under warranty...unless you have under 5k miles on it...we have had cobalt ss and vetts that come though with over 10k miles on them and gm wont warranty them..wear and tear they say

I had the burning clutch smell at first but I was also very out of practice. Now at 3200 miles there is no smell but I'm also a much better driver. Not sure which should get the credit but either way, no more smell.

Ahh crap this happened to me last night: I was in competitive mode and revved to about 5000rpms then dropped the clutch and the clutch seemed to be stuck halfway to the ground. It wouldn't go back to normal till i drove it about a hundred feet then I got the awful clutch smell that the M6 Camaro likes to share. Does anyone know why? Isn't the Camaro supposed to be able to do that in competitive mode which they call "Launch Mode?" Someone please inform me why my car is doing this! Thanks so much....

+1 with everyone else...
Im at ~5500 miles right now and while its not NEAR as bad as it was within the first 1,000 miles, i still get the smell on incline starts and especially backing up my inclined driveway. I've been driving sticks for 9+ years now so i trust my driving skills. Like everyone else, I hope GM will replace the clutch under warranty if it goes out, but if not i'll just go aftermarket and not worry with it anymore.

I noticed big gaping vents in the bellhousing of the manual tranny. This would mean the "smell" of the clutch would be noticeable a whole lot faster than other cars I have owned where there are no vents.
Just my 2 cents...
