The throw out bearing in on the end of the slave cylinder. When you push in the pedal, the cylinder extends, the throw out bearing contacts the springs on the pressure plate.. releasing the clutch.
I'm guessing the smell is clutch material... can't speculate the cause with out tearing it apart...

Did you happen to weigh any of the parts?

Good choice on the Monster Slave support. That's the only way to fix the issue. I would be cautious with a stiff single disc clutch in a 5th gen. Ive seen the factory master cylinder fail due to extra pressure.

Not sure all that mattered to your question, but they all require the removal of the transmission to replace, except the master cylinder. The Hill Assist or Traction Control active can make all kind of things happen. I assume the smell you are noticing is the clutch "burning" or overheating from slipping to get you up the hill or launched. It could be normal, and the amount of throttle you give before the clutch is fully engaged (released) can make the smell pretty quick. A good test of the clutch is to watch your RPMs, especially in 6th gear say at 60mph..... as you hit the gas moderately aggressive, if the RPMs increase and your speed does not increase, it typically indicates a slipping clutch. Throwout bearing can act the same, but also not engage enough making the car not want to come out of gear..... Others might be able to describe it better, If I was you, I would certainly keep an eye on it and observing the symptoms early, then having it looked at is a lot better than waiting for the tow truck and cancelling all plans for that day or more.....

Your 2ND part -- Hill Start and odor. Since new my clutch gives of a burning smell when I have not driven for a few days and/or starting off on steep slope at intersection. Even after hill assist releases can smell some clutch burn. Likely the flywheel corrode some while sitting in driveway similar to the brake rotor.

With an upgraded clutch, Monster stage 3 for me, Monster rep told me to beat on it when I was driving too smooth the clutch did not grab properly.
