simply cut out the bottom of the air box, only leaving where the panel filter sits and the places where it bolts uncut, it seemed to make the intake louder, whether there was a performance increase or not idk

Yep, you'll get more sound... but more than likely less performance due to the hotter air.
The stock snorkel opening is entirely obstructed by the signal light, and is next to the radiator (heat). Eyeballing it I am thinking "Maybe this could be better. Why not make a new snorkel open near the front wheel well (away from heat) - like many other cars do?"
Next I am definitely going to measure the area of the intake tube minus the big MAF/IAT sensor divided by the opening to the intake manifold. If the ratio is less than 1, I think a larger diameter tube to the sensor would make sense.

You can't change the size of the MAF housing (the tube with MAF sensor in it) until you can tune the car... The air calculations are all based on it being a certain size... If you change the size it will throw off the calculations... change the size too much and you'll end up throwing a code...

i figured as much, but since it's the bottom of the airbox wouldn't it just draw incoming colder air as the top and sides being near the engine would be covered??? just a little food for thought. i removed the air snorkel and threw a K&N on my 1ss, didn't lose any power, nor did it gain any.

Agreed but is the air calculation based on;
1. The diameter of the intake plenum or
2. The diameter of the intake plenum minus that area blocked by the sensor- the darn sensor is so big it I am guessing that it easily blocks 10-15 % of the air that would have passed had it not been there

Either way the stock sensor is too big...wonder if there is a smaller one that would do the job.

Scratch what I said before - the GM engineers were on top of that! I just finished the measurements they already did increase the diameter of the intake tube at the sensor (7 sq in) relative to the intake manifold diameter (6 sq in). This take into account the sensor and plenum obstructions.

Also as far as the heat I discovered that to know this I would need an instrument to measure this and the pressure to find the optimal site.

Anyway I think I just put in my K&N and quit trying to out think it all...for awhile.
