Total agreement! I've got 2 - 3" of snow on the ground...7 degrees...a 2SS with a stick and my summer Pirelli's are handling it just FINE as long as I am not being STUPID! It is called common sense...take your time, drive sssllllooooowwwww, give everyone plenty of room and have a light foot...basically....same winter driving habits as in ANY vehicle.

Temps have been way below normal here in Knoxville TN as of late with lows in the teens at night. I was out in my 2SS/RS the last few nights and although the "summer only" P zero's were hard as rocks the first few miles, once they warmed up a bit all was normal. I didn't try to test their limit of adhesion but for normal driving they seemed fine.

It think you will find that 90 % of the cars shown in the salvage thread were from drivers who were on summer only tires when the car " got away" from them.

IF the car is in an accident on summer tires and some one is injured ( maybe a child pedestrian) will you tell the mother it was not your fault? Will the insurance cover you.?

I dont know, Ive been driving fbodies in winters since 1997 and this is by far the easiest to get silly on you. The tires are like stones, kind of like the flintstones car in cold weather. Im not stock anymore, but Im not making crazy hp either.

I guess you guys that dont notice a difference are just better drivers.

Don't slam the accelerator everytime you're at a damn stop light, and you wont spin your backend loose. It's common sense for any winter period.
Totally agree!! Well said!! I was so paranoid after reading threads here in the fall. It dropped below 40 degs. here in Mass. in October...I said to myself " oh no, can't drive my car anymore, it's below 40 degs!"

You know what? My car drives just fine!! I have noticed no decreased performance in cold weather. I use common sense and don't floor it from a stop. It was 5 degs. last week, the roads were dry, and my car was fine. I would never drive it when snow is predicted (there's that common sense factor) But mine is a DD, I'll drive it all winter when there's no snow predicted.

Did you know that 63.48% of statistics are made up on the spot?

Even when it was summer, I didn't slam the Accelerator from a stop light. Yeah, I have fun with the car when in completely safe conditions... but some of these folks say "When I gave the car a bit of gas, it just got loose on me...". Define "a bit of gas" for me.

I think you will find that there are a vast majority of folks that drive their cars perfectly fine in cold (not winter) conditions without issue.

I would NEVER drive my car when there was snow in the forecast, or hard packed snow on the ground. If I know there's ice, or that snow has melted, and refrozen the next morning... I take it easy. The same folks that are destroying their cars are probably the same folks that end up guard-railing their SUV's in the winter also.

Yes, All-Seasons probably grip better, but on the 1.6 mile commute on the backroad before the interstate in the morning, I find my Pirelli's to be quite warmed up enough to be just fine.

.... and don't worry, if I end up destroying my car, I'll be sure to let you know.

The whole subject is drive according to conditions. The Pirellis will be fine,if you drive with caution. Dont get crazy and you wont get in trouble, and posssibly have a wreck. Ive driven my 72 z28 with 525hp in snow, I didnt get crazy, and dont follow too closely, leave yourself plenty of room to get stopped. As was said earlier, use common sense!

I think some of the comments here are misleading. For an average driver, the summer tires will be difficult to drive on during the winter (in climates that frequently get snow). Not impossible, but difficult. I have all season tires and a rear wheel drive pickup truck. If I don't put it into 4WD, it's VERY easy to spin out the back end on packed snow. You have to pay a lot of attention.

So, yes, you can handle it, but if you can afford winter tires, get them! You won't regret it that one time you have to slam on your brakes during an emergency stop.

I broke down in the first few days of Dec an permitted my Maro for a trip to the dyno. Roads dry temp 3deg c or 38 deg f. I always drive my Maro aggressivley. On more then one occasion my lilly white a$$ felt her break loose. I attribute that totally to road and tire temp.

So if you must drive your Maro in cold temputaures on summer tires fill your boots. Don't WHINNE if you loose control of it and F__K IT UP!

Mine parked in a heated garage till spring.

Could you please post a link to where you found that data, I would love to see it.

No, I'd tell the mother I was driving like an idiot and it was my fault, not the tires.

Check this article out, provides a comparison between all-season, winter and summer tires. Very helpful in comparing performance characteristics.

Link is interesting, but they do not address the performance of summer tires on below freezing temps on dry roads. It's obvious they do not perform well on a snow covered road. As I stated earlier in this thread, I have noticed no decline in performance on cold dry roads. I would not drive my car when snow is predicted and would not drive on snow covered roads with my summer tires. My car is a DD and will use it all winter long unless there is snow on the road. (But I don't tromp on it from a stop and don't drive like an idiot) It has been as low as 5 degs. in my area, my car performed and drove fine.

These are the biggest things to point out. It was cold, and you drive "aggressively".

I agree that common sense rules. I am driving them in the winter but around town only. I don't go on the highway with them. My real concern is, BRAKING. I know how to not spin the wheels, but my concern is stopping and controlling the car in an evasive situation. If the rubber doesn’t grip under acceleration than it will suffer from the same lack of traction under deceleration. I also agree that should you get in an accident in the winter on summer only tires that you face a legal risk, lawyers look for every angle and this gives them one.

Again, I am driving on them, but to be fair, I think everyone should be aware of all the potential risks.

FYI - I plan to buy all seasons when the stock tires wear out.
