License plate covers are manufactured to obscure and prevent traffic cameras from snapping and sending you a bill.

As well, covers cut down on our ability to view and visually process the numbers on the plate.

The lame reasons to pull you over...Dangling ornament from rear view mirror and license plate frames.

Unconstitutional without probable cause...

You might want to check your local laws about radar detectors too. In some states they can confiscate it and ticket you

I disagree, tinted plates covers have been around as long as I have been driving(over 40 years), How long has Triffic cameras been around? It may be legal, but I personally think it's a form of harassment, being that both times I was pulled over, there was no real reason, one of those times I was moving alone in a traffic jam.

If your car was stolen and a police officer couldn't quite catch the plate # because of the cover you might be upset that you had it on there.

Illegal in New Jersey! It could be a $54 ticket, depending on the officer mood...

Yep. Don't run. You know the consequences for running and that ain't cool. You made the right choice. There's many reasons why it took a while for him to pull out. Maybe he was contemplating pulling you over...but, obviously you had a good attitude about the whole deal since you got a warning. So, kudos to you on being cool with the officer. You got stopped, learned a law, and were open to the understanding of the law. I write warnings to those who understand they did wrong. That's what I feel warnings are for. If they don't want to listen and don't believe, etc., a ticket can be written where we can then go to a court of law where a prosecutor or Judge can teach them the law.

There are hazardous traffic moving violations and then there are non-hazardous. You can be sitting in traffic for an hour...and I can come up and see that your brake light is broken, that your inspection is expired, your registration is expired, you have dangly things from your rear view mirror, you don't hve your headlights on within 30 minutes of the sun setting, you don't have a front plate, your rear brake lights have been tinted, you don't have side mirrors, you have a REALLY loud car, your music is playing too loudly, you are not wearing a seatbelt...and dude...the list can go on and on.

Plate covers might have been around for 40 years, but laws change for reason. Laws differ from state to state and the best advice I can give anyone is to check with their state laws before going out and doing something to their cars. I mean, people put on blue lights on the front of their cars and go driving around. They then get all pissed off because an officer writes them a ticket when there is a public set of rules which state what you can and can't do.

OP, use 5 minutes of your time and google your state law regarding traffic code, license plates, and visibility. I guarantee you that you will see what they say about the tinted cover. Even a clear cover can be deemed illegal if you are driving to my left and the sun is setting in such a manner that there's glare on the plastic not allowing me to see your plate.

It just all depends on the state law. In TX, yes, it's illegal.

On a side note,

Everyone needs to keep this on topic or like most cop threads that turn into bashing threads, someone will get warned, someone will get an infraction, another person will get banned....and then the thread will go poof or get locked like a lot of others.

THE OP asked if the cover was legal or not. Keep THIS as the topic, please.

I honestly don't want to have this get out of hand. And, everyone remember THIS post as a reference when it comes time for those infractions to be handed out....

It is illegal here in Tennessee... As are license frames that obstruct any portion of the month or year expiration stickers... also the county sticker is supposed to be visible.

1st suspension handed out.

Should anyone else care to disregard previous warnings and site rules, we'll be happy to continue doing our job.
