I scratched my left front wheel last week. I thought I was close but did not (could not) tell I was sooo close to the curb. I felt like a total non-driver!

I have the polished aluminum wheels. My thought is to have the body shop that painted my stripes grind down the scar, polish the rim and then clear coat the wound.

Thanks 2ltcamaro for starting this thread. I feel a little better knowing I am not alone.

I have been searching high and low for the correct way to fix a defect that I had on my rim since my dealer will not fix it. After numerous emails with the customer support at Spraylat which prety much said the only way I can get it was buy 100 gallons of the paint. STUPID HUH. So I used some of my resources and finally getting some emails for the CEO and engineering department at Spraylat I finally got this email this morning.

Quote:
I understand you are looking for some paint for your 2010 Camaro wheel. You stated it had some imperfections on it when you purchased the car. My recommendation would be to take it back to the dealer and insist on them replacing the rim. Let me explain why:

1. The process of painting Aluminum Cast Wheel is extensive and can not be duplicated easily outside of a wheel manufacturing facility.

2. The wheel goes through and extensive cleaning and anticorrosion process prior to painting

3. The first coat of paint on the wheel is a powder primer coat requiring a bake cycle of 375 degrees for approximately 30 minutes.

4. This is followed by our color coat which is applied through a very controlled application. Film thickness is critical to get the correct color development. Application also effects the orientation of the metallic flake which will also effect the color.

5. The wheels are then baked again.

6. The wheels are then powder coated with an Acrylic Clear Powder coating and baked a 3rd time. The mill thickness of the paint and the bake temperature give it the high gloss and smooth appearance.

7. The above process is the OEM industry standard for North American Car Manufactures and produces and extremely durable finish.

If you need any more informaiton please let me know.

Best regards,
Also as most already know GM customer support is worthless,

So right now the best way is to simply replace the wheel at a major cost. To get one direct from GM it is $495 plus shipping or just wait for someone to split a set.

Your next option is use paint code WA263M, this is the closest match to the color but will lose some of the flake and shimmer that the wheels have.

Good Luck.

I brought mine to a local rim repair shop...Mine were pretty bad i was pulling out of a condo and 2 guys came flying in at high speeds with their hummers so i move over to let them by and make sure they dont hit me..the drive way had a cruve to it and i scraped my 2 right rims pretty bad about half the circumferance on one and just over a quarter on the other one....they sanded it down blended out the scrape painted it with a color called Hyper Silver and put a clear coat on the whole rim for $120 each...looks like nothing ever happend!!

Yep, right now (as I've been told by Spraylat, Chevrolet Customer Service, and my Dealership Parts Department), probably the best solution is to go have an automotive paint shop color-match the paint and touch-up the damaged wheel. I'm sure they would sell you some of the paint in a small container for future touch-up purposes, but I'm just not sure how long it would last before it dries up. Eventually, someone will produce and distribute the "official" Midnight Silver touch-up paint, but for now, it's just a waiting game. I think we need to keep complaining....the squeeky wheel gets the grease!!!!

Up here we have a couple of Wheel Repair Places that I have dealt with over the years. (Used to be a mechanic) The one place I would highly recommend...the other place not!

Look around for a good wheel repair place. Talk to mechanics who specialize in alignments and deal with broken rims on Porches and such. These wheel places can repair wheels with big...and I mean big...chunks broken out of them. You can not tell at all where the chunk was missing when they come back. On a $1000 rim, I have been billed less than $500 which is a steal when you consider the price of a new rim.

Our rims are around $500...I'm sure they could repair it like new for considerably less. Just ask around at your local alignment shops for their recommendations.

Your welcome. I'm going to wait till I get used to parking next to a curb before I decide to fix it.

On my 4th Gen Hawk I had Firestone SZ50s and I could have sworn they had curb feelers built in. Namely the tire itself had a built in lip to protect the rim. I may be crazy it could have been another set of tires I put on afterwards though. Nothing like that exists today in OEM sizes?

Another available option:

http://www.awrswheelrepair.com/

I have contacted them and awaiting a response, but their specialty is repairing alloy wheels.
