Welcome to the paint chip club. I have to get my entire car repainted.

Somehow I don't think low sales was why the ABM was taken off the market. lol.

My car is 2 weeks old and the front looks like it is 10 yrs old, it is all highway driving. I am going to the dealership this week to see what they will do, I will keep you all updated. If you have a brand new car, get the clear bra right away!!

Went to the dealership today and spoke with the service manager regarding chips on front. He said a GM rep would have to take a look at it, is going to call to set up an appointment... not looking good for me... the guy was kind of an ass, acted like he was trying to find a reason not to have it covered when he was looking at it. Also saw some very very small chips in the windshield (like a tiny little sparkle) and said I must have driven behind something that was loosing rocks like a truck. I assured him I hadnt (I've only had the car 2 weeks). I will post again after I talk to the GM rep.

Just left my car at the dealer. The GM rep said they would do "a one time courtesy" repaint of the front fascia. Gave me a new Malibu to drive and everything. So i guess they know there is an issue, but the "courtesy" repaint makes it sound like it is owner error, not a problem with GM paint... I will let you guys know how it looks when I get it back, it is going straight for clear bra!!

Done, looks great. If you have paint chip problems, don't give up!! If the service manager doesn't want to paint it, ask to get a GM rep involved.

I only have about 2 chips that are actually noticeable, but what really sucks is if you guys really look closely you will find many more small ones. I have about 4 tiny ones on the inside part of each of the fender arches.

Where do you live? The dealer i spoke to treated me the same way he tried to blame it on the wheels i put on it. but the chips are in front of the rear wheel, like its gonna sling rock forward then they magically do a curveball 90 degree right turn and hit the gills. They said i could speak to a gm rep but never called.
I have a 97 camaro not a chip on it. 2010 camaro started chipping literally at the first car wash less than 1000 miles.
Very disappointing especially having a red one the white chips are very noticeable. check out my thread.

I live in St. Louis, have you tried a different dealership? Have you asked to speak to someone above the service manager, maybe a dealership owner? What about your salesman? Tell him/her that you are not satisfied with your purchase. I would keep calling/complaining. I think you will have better results if you are able to get a GM rep involved. There is also a customer satisfaction # you can call in the back of the manual, you can submit a complaint there and they should call you back. Tell them your dealership is not following up as promised. Good Luck.

They should have told us to be careful with the paint for 6 months or something.

I'm still trying to adjust to this thinking. It's hard. I want my car to last forever !

I just sold a 2008 BMW 135i that I drove for 18 months with roughly 16K miles. the car had two (yes, I said TWO) paint chips during those 18 months. my Camaro that was purchased right before Christmas (with roughly 2500 miles) already has like 7 paint chips.

freaking 7 paint chips in only four months while my BMW only had 2 in 18 months. that's freaking ridiculous. GM must be using some pretty cheap paint which isn't setting too well with this car owner.

oh, and by the way. none of my paint chips are on the front end of my car. I had the entire front end covered with a 3M clear bra which ran me a little over $1K. I can't imagine how horrible my front end would look already if it wasn't protected.

GM should be ashamed by such poor quality.....
Agreed !!

The slightest touch against anything, and you have a new scar on these cars.

I had the run around at the dealership too. This paint is crap. Short of a class action law suite I don't think GM will ever do a thing about it.

Negative - the paint is already fully cured by the time it's leaving the factory.

Water based paint has an extremely fast cure time - it's the clear that is the issue. Regardless of this, the water-based paint shouldn't really affect things, it's more of the clear-coat they're using.

After talking to the Camaro team at the Fest...I don't think this is a PAINT problem, so much as it is a design effect...look at all the flat surfaces on the front end of the car. It's still relatively aerodynamic...but that front end has many tight edges, and flat pieces...no curves. This will exacerbate the effect a stone or piece of debris has when smacking your front end...paint will chip when hit at 60mph...this is true of ALL cars, and it's part of the reason everyone has switched to plastic front-ends (rusting is bad). What effects the chipping frequency is the design of the facia.

As for the rear quarter...again, this is design...look at how the door sweeps into the gills area. Part of Fluid-dynamics explains how air or liquid will tend to follow the surface of something as it flows (poke a pen under your faucet at 45*)...as the air follows that door panel with debris in it, it flows RIGHT into that gills area. But personally, I wouldn't give up the look for anything!

That said...I looked at a lot of cars at the Fest...not a single one looked so bad I'd consider it a distinctive "problem". It's chipping...it happens. If you live in an area with more debris than normal, I STRONGLY suggest a clear bra. You may have to change it once every few years due to dust buildup in the edges...but it might be worth it.
