If money is going to be tight. You need to think about operating costs between the two:
1) Insurance and property tax extra every month
2) Premium gas and less gas mileage
3) Summer tires that don't last long and can not be rotated on a SS or RS

The 2LT is still going to be faster than any small block Camaro in the past, except for the Z-28.

John, let's be pratical. Stop and look at the big picture for a moment. The reason you are having such a problem deciding on how to do this is you emotionally are wanting this car (I feel your pain) but down deep (driven by your comon sinse) you know you shouldn't be spending the $$ for a luxury like a new Camaro when you have 2 kids/wife/house/ify credit/ in a terrible economy as we live in today. I'm older than you and have made the same mistake you are about to. If you buy A CAMARO you will struggle with payments for 5 - 7 years on a bare bones. I don't want to see you struggle to buy your dream car only to become miserable cause you're deep in financial stress. We are already seeing this happen to some on this forum. They are begging for some one to save them and buy their CAMARO SS cause they made the same mistake. My suggestion is to get the jeep paid off and fix it or buy another $5,000 vehicle that works for your family and you. Later on down the road when your kids are futher along and you've saved your $$ you can go out a buy (with cash) a USED SS 2S CAMARO ALREADY WITH MODS ALREADY DONE AND 500RWHP. By that time it will be 5 years from and you'll only have to pay $15 - $20K for a car that now cost $60K with the same mods. Don't pay all that interest to the BANKER so he can buy his Corvett. John, I waited (I'm 54 and kids are gone) till I could easily afford it and then I went out and paid cash for a new Camaro SS 2S and added the mods to it. I've been waiting for years and doing without so I could enjoy this moment without sweating the payments. I learned the hard way years ago.
Good luck John. Questions? PM me.

In this day and age, $35K is not a lot of money for a new car...

Maybe for you, but in this day and age EVERYTHING is more expensive, and the camaro is a toy. Toys are not necessary. A lot of us have one as a second or third car. Not everyone can do or justify that. $35k may not be a huge amount but it's a down payment on a house.

As for the OP. If you really want an SS just wait and save. Over time your credit will get better and you'll have a large amount for a down payment. Otherwise you could get an LT and if you find it lacking you can always trade it in down the line sometime.

I sure do disagree with that. The Camaro is a fully functional automobile that gets above average gas mileage. It's a car and as such $35K is perfectly reasonable. Now, if a person can't afford a new car, then so be it. Have you priced minivans lately? Looked at any new SUVs?

I went with the 6 in a RS and seriously love it plus the mileage is pretty good and i knew if i got an SS I would be getting into more trouble than I need. believe me the cops stare you down many times. they are looking for you to mess up. around here if your caught street racing in any way shape or form its 1000.00 ticket and 6 points. all it takes is a challenger or mustang to pull up at a light and the urge comes to gun it a little. that is enough for the ticket if a cop sees you and around here we have undercovers that blend in well. just a thought

Not the exact analogy I would have used but it does get the point across. From your post it sounds like you would not be happy with the V6.
I was the same way in the beginning, thinking of settleing for the 6. My wife even knew that I would not be happy in the end and would always regret not going with the SS.
In short, work your butt off for a few months, make all you can and pay off the Jeep and revisit this subject in two or three months.

Nicely said Camaro54! I'm 40 and the "emotions" of wanting this new ride are high! I could probably afford it..but I also have a nice home, two relatively new cars and a 6 year old (college bells are ringing). I'm going to wait...get all the finances in order..and then hit the home run. (But that plan still doesn't keep me from hitting Camaro5.com every day and cleaning my keyboard from the drool of the awesome rides!!!) Its hard to be fiscally responsible...and sometimes..not fun.

Thanks for your service to our country, John!

Lots of replies and a lot of mixed responses. As far as affording it (someone mentioned looking into another car)... it's not an option for me. This is the car I want and I'm not about to go through what I did with this Jeep (getting a lemon). The Camaro has more than enough room for everyone in my family so that's not a concern at all (I don't plan on, nor will have any additional kids). Along with that I make enough in a year to buy two SS's... and have the opportunity to work overtime almost as much as I can. Affording it over the long haul isn't even a slight concern to me. It's getting it right this second with what's available to me the problem.

As far as settling is concerned... I have been thinking about it more and more because it seems like the better option. The SS sounds great (and drove fantastic when I borrowed one from the dealer for a short drive)... but like I said, the cost may just outweigh the perk (that being the engine).

Will I be happy with the V6? I've been asking myself that more and more over the last few days. I would be... but I know I would be wanting the SS at some point. I suppose I could work some overtime like a deranged animal and trade it in for one later down the road, or pay it off (I planned to have it paid off in as little as 2 years), and get a 2012 by then.

At this point I just don't know. I know what I'd love to have but it just isn't working out that way right now. But it's a gamble at this point to keep driving the Jeep when at any point it could basically go off the road, roll over, and explode. Haha.

I'd like to keep hearing from forum members... and hopefully this will help the decision. I either need to keep at the SS as an option, or go for the LT.

trade in the Jeep for an SS(@MSRP). Have the v6 RS, put some decent mods on it, much happier w/ it, compared to say a stock SS, HP aside. RS option is only way to go, imo. And a 1LT is cheaper yet, if you can pass on all the gizmos. You also have to consider monthly family bills. Talk w/ the other 1/2 & see what works best for everyone.

I meant to mention this after seeing someone else suggest this... the Jeep has some front end damage, and wear and tear throughout. The front end damage extends through the joints and the wheel screeches/wobbles at certain angles. That means the value I don't think would even exceed what's left to pay on it (plus it has 116,000 miles on it).

Let's talk mods and horsepower for a second. What's the most someone has gotten out of the V6 in terms of extra horsepower. Is an extra 100 even possible? Because if you could I suppose the V8 is a moot point when the automatic SS would be around the same output.

Mods to me that affect performance are what I'd be going for. I have absolutely no interest in changing the look of a vehicle when to me it's what's under the hood that counts. But I suppose for the short term or even long term as a secondary car (if I were to get a V8 later) a souped up V6 with extra mods wouldn't be so bad.

Since you seem to be able to afford it, I'd shop for better financing. If you even slightly want the full monty (SS), don't settle for less because you will regret it later. I got my 1SS RS M6 IOM for less than $32K. I imagine you can do the same or better now that the 2011s are about to hit the street. I also hope you understand that my advice is worth every cent you are paying for it.
