Well today I was tired of using my Clutch and I just drove around all day in first gear.

I asked you a question, thanks for answering.

Yes I agree, manual transmissions can self destruct under heavy torque load situations, such as powershifting and slamming gears. They also are more prone to break drivetrain parts under abuse, it's the nature of the beast. These are all failures caused by the operator though. Another reason drag racers don't like manual transmissions, constantly breaking things for no reason gets old real fast.

All automatics are destined to fail regardless of how much maintenance or babying you do to them. So I guess they haven't changed much either by your logic.
Auto trans are a lot better today as far as holding up. My last car a 97 pontiac had almost 160k miles and the trans was flawless...only changed the fluid one time in that 160k miles.

I have had an auto in all of my cars. Main reason for choosing auto in my DD (12 Focus) was that I have a 14 mile commute to work, it takes over an hour. If a car is going to be my DD it is going to be an automatic. When I had my mustangs, they were also my DD so they were autos as well. If I am lucky enough to have a second car as a toy, it would be a stick

Has to be manual. It becomes second nature. Sure, an automatic may be a click quicker in the 1/4 mile but certainly not as fun to drive.

Now that made me laugh. I couldn't figure out the tranny either so I drove around in Reverse all day too. It has been one heck of a day. LOL

I really wanted the automatic for my ZL1. I know, your thinking auto in that car are you crazy? I am lazy and like to just put it in gear and go. Most of my driving is in the booneys and is start and stop. But I checked into it further, because my dealer is totally clueless, and found out that if you purchase the auto the gas guzzler tax in the ZL1 is $2600, not $1300 like in the manual. I looked at it this way. I'm not paying more of a penalty, the extra $1300, for the automatic than the actual price of the automatic, $1185. So needless to say I purchased manual. I'll have just as much fun, I'll just have to be less lazy.

It has been debated about faster in manual vs auto. The computer won't miss a gear in an auto and a manual can shift at higher rpms... get a driver to drive two identical cars one with an auto and one with a manual and have them race the clock and see who wins.

Consider the source. Your typical muscle car enthusiast isn't a racer, their a commuter with a car they like, but for street cars look at what the racers are running. I mean the real serious drivers.

The few I've asked about auto or stick told me the skill level of the driver counts more with similar cars but take a wild guess what they were using.....

Maybe they were just creatures of habit.

If you didn't buy what you wanted, you failed.

Manual, if you have to ask why, you probably wouldn't understand.
