I'd do it if I was buying a new Z06 or ZR1. Its 5 grand on cars that cost over 75k. As a percentage of purchase price, its about the same as the RS package for Camaros.

Even better would be if you could build engines to get a free car

Wow that's pretty cool. I would love to do that if I had the coin. I would actually also like to see an option though where you just buy the car with a bare, uninstalled block (longblock or shortblock, whatever the customer chooses) but everything else already in the car needed to make it work. No I would not expect a power train warranty in that case Or hell maybe there's already a way to do that and they just don't list it as an option because most people have no reason to do that. I am sure there are a number of guys who already have built LSX engines and would like the ability to buy a 5th gen with no engine at a cheaper cost then drop in what they have.

Didnt Lambo or Ferrari already do a test run of this?

I seem to recall maybe 5% of the buyers doing it..maybe closer to 2%.

I dont see someone flying from California to Michigan, pay for all the lodging and food, just to (PAY!) to build a LS7 or LS9. I mean..probably close to 8500 or 9,000 bucks? I could see it if the cars were really limited edition and super rare, but Corvettes, even Z06's..arent that rare. ZR1's are a bit slim still, tho.

If I was spending $100,000 plus bucks for a ZR-1, I would let them assemble the engine.

I don't even bag my own groceries.

Those aren't robots, just automated fastening equimpment computerized to monitor torque and sequence. These are pretty much hand assembled. Just the tools are a little more high tech than a single socket or torque wrench.

People already spend big bucks to fly to Bowling Green KY for Museum Delivery. It's only $500 or so, but the expense to fly out and drive your car home is pretty popular.

When you put that way.........................LOL

Just look at it this way, many people on this site spent 5 large on Ground Effects and 21" wheels to make their cars unique or special. Being able to say, "I built my engine" and have YOUR NAME on the builders tag would just be another way to make your car special or different. Pricey, yes. But not much when you compare to some wheel tire packages or suspension upgrades Camaro owners are doing.

Yeah, I don't get it. That 5k would have been better spent as an option to upgrade the interior into something truly competitive on these cars. Of course, that isn't comparing apples to apples since the truth is that this little 'build your own engine' scheme is probably almost pure profit for GM, which is why they did it. Still, that doesn't make it a great idea.

The interior is ... mediocre, to put it mildly. And cars like the R8 put the Corvettes interior to shame. But I'm pretty sure most of the complaints about the Corvettes interior come from non-owners. And I'd be willing to bet that this idea came from Corvette owners. So, GM could either do something that buyer would appreciate, or something that would cause critics to look elsewhere to complain.

Surely GM could do *something* to improve the interior of their halo car without driving the price up?

Ford vastly upgraded the interior of the Mustang premium(and GT500) and Taurus without sending cost into the roof.

GM and Chrysler should follow!
