Maybe where you live and depending on your weather/road conditions. But in my 30+ years of driving I have NEVER had anything splashed on my windshield. If you read my original post I did say "It's not like I spend a lot of time bombing around in the rain". My car doesn't play well in the rain unless I drive it like an Aveo... and that's NOT GONNA HAPPEN

so it only sees dry weather....

I could see removing the wipers on a play car, but on a dd, even if you don't use them in the rain, they are awfully nice for the washers when needed.
