i understand that the 5" tube creates a "reservoir" for immediate throttle response, but your intake tube directly off the air filter is still 4" correct?

so the air slows down in the 5" chamber area due to the volume which helps with keeping closer to atmospheric pressure, but there is a lot of turbulence at both transitions points between the air filter and the throttle body. the pressure change will really only be noticeable at lower RPM's though. once the air gets moving i will have less of an effect, but the turbulence created will. just something to think about.

maybe if you were able to go from a 5" intake opening to a graduated 4" tube at the TB, you'd be able to maximize your volume and maintain velocity at the same time without turbulence. but i'd imagine that can get a bit pricey to create.

have you dyno'd this beast yet? curious to see what your before and afters are. also, what are your LTFT's looking like?

Interesting stuff here. I don't see how going from 4" to 5" and back to 4" can do anything positive for power or airflow. As someone else mentioned, I would think the turbulence created by the expansion and then reduction of the air volume would be detrimental, rather than beneficial. I'm no air-volume expert by any stretch of the imagination but I do know a little about plumbing (household residential water) and this arrangement would ultimately get less water to the fixture.

One BIG problem that I am seeing is that you are going to be sucking hot air into the engine. The IAT is much more relevant to making power than the volume of air you are bringing in when it comes to what you have set-up N/A. If you want do have a DIY kit (although I dont reccoment it) I would at least consider doing a heat shield of some sort to block off some of that engine bay heat. Just something to consider.

I agree 110% IAT is everything!

Interesting experiment. After a year you would think he would have some data or observations. I do see one possible benefit of the 5" tube. For one thing air does no like to make a 90 degree turn without losses. So maybe the 5" tube would help in that regard. However there can be losses from the expansion and then the contraction of the air so that may negate any gain. In an intake runner situation if you expand the runner area than contract it again energy is lost that would be helping in filling the cylinder.

Fyi... I picked up 16 hp on the dyno going from a 4.5" airaid to a 5" tube. Back to back, same dyno same day. Depending on the set up... there are gains to be had.

They are beneficial on LSA Supercharged cars like the ZL1 (Like Onyx Wolf said), as well as on roots or PD supercharger systems....NA?....Not so much, unless maybe if its a big cube build. I doubt a stock NA LS3 is picking up power with a 5" intake.
