Any tape will leave glue residue if left on too long. Even painters masking tape. Goo Gone works but another alternative that works well and doesn't damage the paint is WD40. Honestly. Spray it on, rub it a bit with your finger then wipe with a clean rag (regularly introducing a clean surface as you go) and all sorts of glue residue comes right off. Of course the area needs a little wash to remove the WD40 reside. But would even say it works better than goo gone.
