You can take two radar detectors of the same make and model and one will out preform the other. If you have one that is working well for you, hang on to it. No matter what, radar detectors don't give you a license to speed, only a warning your about to be had. Put too much faith in one and you will be paying a higher fee for insurance because of tickets. Instant on, clocked by car or airplane, time to distance are used and your radar detector is more valueable as a paperweight.
Your own eyes scanning the roadways will pick up the traffic enforcement many times early on and with the help of a quality radar detector, you will be able to check your speed when you get that blip. Life is good....

You make good points, putting all your faith in radar detectors is kinda foolish. What I like to do is let the fastest people pass me and use them as the sacrificial lamb. So when the cops pull tricks like "Instant On" the radar detector will pick it up and I will have a chance to slow down.

Good idea. It's fun to watch some clown race off and hear the radar detector scream, they get pulled over, while you drive by at 10 over the limit.

Not being the fastest driver on the road is very effective, although if you're lucky enough to be in a new Camaro you'll look like the fastest and probably be a target even when other people are passing you. After all, if you're a cop and seeing a million Camries and SUVs all day, and then a shiny new Camaro comes into view...which car would you look at?

Except if I could get a Camaro, I mostly try to have vehicles that blend in (and that means minimizing my visible accessories/modifications too).

Another problem with not being the fastest car on the road is when you're the only car on the road. I drive a lot of low-traffic roads, which is really pleasant except for the part about getting ticketed. I try to obey the speed limit...

I do that now and I don't even have a radar detector. With all the people up from New York, New Jersey, and Florida it has become a pastime for me.

Even though I never got a speeding ticket since I started driving 7 years ago I would like an additional safety blanket.

Yea thats why I fear getting the Camaro in Victory Red, it's stunning with white stripes but it's a cop magnet. Someone should start a thread on the subject: Which color attracts the most tickets.

The GPS feature on the Escort 9500 eliminates most -if not all- false alarms so you can run your detector on max sensitivity all the time. They also have red-light and speed camera database that is updateable. In addition there is a mark feature that lets you mark know speed traps/school zones etc. and the unit will verbally remind you that you are nearing these areas. The 9500ci also has laser shifting - laser detectors just tell you your getting a ticket - laser shifting jams the laser gun, giving you time to hit the brakes.

For stealth the 9500ci is the way to go - mine is virtually invisible to someone that doesn't know where to look and I mounted it with a hidden toggle so if I do get pulled over I can shut it off. Its a bit pricey but better that a high dollar ticket and the increased insurance premiums for 5 years.

Just my .02 from someone who currently uses all the different detectors.
Any chance you could post some pictures of the 9500ci install? I'm considering doing that once I get my camaro. I did put the whistler Fuzion in my camry, and I like the idea of the radar detector having the sensor under the hood, and the laser sensor behind the rearview mirror.

I am out of town on vacation so I took these with my phone - plz forgive the quality - I will get some better pictures when I get back into town. There is a radar reciever and two laser shifters in the front grill, you cannot see them - and a laser shifter that attaches to the rear license plate using the two screws on the top of the plate.
