If I remember correctly most wear on a properly operating engine occurs within the first two to three minutes of start up.
That statement is probably spot on, and the wear occurs because lubricating fluids are not up to operating temps. The longer the engine runs with the fluids below operating temps, the more wear that can occur. Fluids reach operating temps much faster driving the car (Like an old person as someone said before) than they do at idle, thus you cause less damage to your engine by driving it easy than letting it sit there and warm up (which takes an eternity to heat the fluids).

My rule was to always wait until it hits 100 and it seemed to be perfect. The oil temperature gauge would move up to a comfortable position to start the car.

Now, I've been doubting myself. Considering "Coolant Temperature" will never be at 100 during the spring/summer.

So, bottom line question: At what "Coolant Temperature" is it okay to start driving? In cold weather I'd say 100, but what about warm weather?
The dealership recommend that you wait until the Oil Press Gauge drops to about 1/2 way before running your vehicle. This will ensure that your engine is well lubricated before taking it for a spin.

generally when it is 32 degrees it's winter and in storage or parked, the roads are usually a mess when it that cold out.

I usually wait about 10-15 min sitting in my garage for it to warm up before I floor it.

The best way if you are trying to make your not get as beat up, then drive it right away but don't hard accelerate until oil temps and car overall engine is warmed up.
