If I'm lucky I'll learn to drive stick in my dad's '65 Corvette or '69 Chevelle SS 396. The Corvette is is prized possesion and the Chevelle is going through restoration so it'll probably be the Chevelle. This is all a chance though, I'm not relying on it.

taught myself on a arcade video game called hard driving. it had a clutch and a force feedback steering wheel. the clutch was realistic too. the game even had a turn key for when you killed the engine. Very rarely did i stall my real car when i got it. btw it was an 83 mustang gt.

I've told this story before, but I like bringing it out because it should make people new to driving a stick shift feel better. I didn't learn how to drive a stick shift until I was 21. I had wanted to learn for some time, but I knew very few people who owned a stick shift car, and those that did did not want me learning on how on their cars. My mom has a '71 Super Beetle she's restoring, but at the time it would randomly die while cruising, ran ridiculously hot, and smelled strongly of leaking gasoline (because it was indeed leaking gasoline) so learning on that was out of the question. We were visiting my wife's family for Christmas, and for some reason someone mentioned I couldn't drive a stick shift. Her cousin immediately got up and told me we were going out and I was going to learn. We used his old beater Toyota pickup. It didn't have a proper ignition key switch, so we had to turn it on using a screwdriver. Any time I stalled, the dash had to be pulled apart and the screwdriver inserted. Now that was motivation not to stall, but given the weaksauce engine (I have no idea how it was still running) I did stall a lot. After I got that down well enough, his dad showed up with his BMW and let me try in that. Thanks to the engine actually being in fine running condition and having a bit more torque than the Toyota, I didn't stall at all and my starts were much, much smoother. The shifter did not want to go into second, but besides that it was great. Since then I haven't had any chance to practice since I still don't know anyone else with a stick-shift car, so things like hill-starts and enthusiastic driving still must be learned, but that will come soon enough. So if you've wanted to learn for some time, don't feel like you missed out. The opportunity will present itself. All it takes is the availability of the right car, the right road, and perhaps the right experienced driver to give you a few pointers and some critique. I'd recommend not learning on anything you're really attached to. Sure, chances are you'll learn without doing major damage, but it is really nice to know that if you do botch it enough to really kill the clutch or something like that, it isn't the end of the world.

Learned to drive in a parking lot in like a '96 ranger. That was probably the the most difficult one I've ever driven. Must be nice to learn in a vette...

I learned on my old friend's crappy 81' Audi. This thing was so ghetto it had a bass boat shiny glitter finish to it and a painted red bumper and spoiler. Really pretty blue but hilarious. He had a kick a$$ sound system in it so it was funny when we rolled next to an escalades that thought they had a cool sound system...

Learned to drive stick in a 1958 Willys Jeep which was our plow truck in Northern Michigan. It was a three speed on the floor. That thing would go anywhere....BTW, this was in 1979...

I got to practice my theory in a a 1965 Ranchero that didn't run ( yup, found on road dead ) , but I was able to sit in the seat and make the engine noises and go through the shift pattern ( three on the tree ). This was when I was 14. Then when I turned 16 my dad decided that I would learn to drive in the family work truck, a 2 1/2 ton flat bed lift/dump truck. He figured if I could drive that I could drive any car or pickup out there. I didn't like getting yelled at when I killed it on hills and such, but I did learn how to drive a stick ! lol.
