Most cars in North America I believe have a mandated speed limiter of 155. I know all BMW's have one, and if you take M-School drivers training they can de-activate and reset to give you some more

Maybe some of you missed where I posted about how the Pontiac dealer flat out told me exactly what speed I had done in the car a few day's earlier. And he was so correct.
In my G8. |

From what I am told it has to do with the stability at speed of the vehicle. Sorry if this is off topic. |

I believe the information stored is minimal. However, if air bags are deployed data from all systems are captured for that time frame and helps OnStar operators deploy medical teams, etc. Just imagine them calling the police and indicating its a head on collision going 55mph versus its a head on collision going 130mph. Police and medical teams would react differently.

a head on collision at 130MPH and the police can hit the donut shop before showing up, there will be no survivors.

Its true your info is recorded and stored, if it shows you abused the car ie over revved, dumped the clutch, power braked etc the manufacturer should NOT honor the warranty. If you drive your car properly you will have no worries in regards to your warranty. Going 130 mph will NOT void your warranty but going 130 mph and down shifting into the wrong gear lunching your tranny could. The above about data being subpoened and used to prosecute wreckless drivers is true and has happened many times in many states so again drive right and no worries. If you want to haul ass take it to the track where its legal.

I was doing 120 once in my 99 TA. Man, was it a thrill, but never do it again on street/highway. If I want to go that fast again, I will take it to the track. |

Here's some anecdotal evidence for you. One of the Airmen who worked for me a few years ago got into a wreck, pretty bad. I had a chance to take a look at some of the police pictures from the scene, which included one of the analog speedometer stuck at 80. The speed limit was 35.

You are right about the stability thing though for most governed cars. Thats why they electronically limit the speed. What I have learned is there is 3 ways to "limit" top speed: Drag limited: in stock form the car simply runs out of ass. Meaning you would never be able to redline your max gear. Once you could not cut through the air any faster the car has reached max speed and will hold, even if you arent at max RPM. Rev limited: you run out of gears. You would simple bounce off the rev limiter all day long. The car could go faster but the gearing won't let it. Governed: electronically set for some reason or another, i.e. the Camaro, 155 (V8) Now take my supercharged 2007 Mustang GT (I had to make it as fast as my SS somehow ) Anyhow, it is a Saleen supercharged GT with many other goodies (not a saleen car). Anyhow the tune took out the governor, set to 150 or something. So the car puts +/- 480 at the wheels on a cool, dry day. So I ask the obvious question... whats this car good for top end. The tech told me the car is good for about 180 with the 5 speed BUT after 160 you will be scared shit less. The hood will flap, the rear will lift up, the car will lose it. In stock form, the body shape is not set up for those speed. My guess is the Camaro is the same story. The fraternal twins:

If you have a manual or just download the manual PDF from this site. Look on page 12-14. See below.
This vehicle has an Event Data Recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations, such as an airbag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in understanding how a vehicle’s systems performed. The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as: • How various systems in your vehicle were operating • Whether or not the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled/fastened • How far, if at all, the driver was pressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal • How fast the vehicle was traveling This data can help provide a better understanding of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur. Important: EDR data is recorded by your vehicle only if a non-trivial crash situation occurs; no data is recorded by the EDR under normal driving conditions and no personal data (e.g., name, gender, age, and crash location) is recorded. However, other parties, such as law enforcement, could combine the EDR data with the type of personally identifying data routinely acquired during a crash investigation |

If you're that worried about it, just buy an extra ECM & change it out when you take it to the dealer.
(Considering it's easy to change the Camaro's out). |
