Hmm.

Perhaps Buick's new tagline should be...

Buick: Our floormats won't try to kill you.

Ya, but owners are just going to go to their dealer and get new mats. The owners will likely view this as positive- it's not the impending demise of Toyota like some of you are hoping/praying for.

It's not like an impending recall for fire danger or sudden loss of steering control or something like that that would make people go dump their Toyotas.

Not this time...only uncontrollable acceleration. And for the record, Toyota HAS had a fire danger issue. A frame-rot issue, a transmission-blow-up issue...among others...And they're all recent.

The fact that people have not began to shy away from such a failure of a company both surprises and dissapoints me. The market is tilted in their favor by stupidity and misperception. :(

I am pleased to see this recall splashed on the front pages of many newspapers, though.

Funny thing, I went to the local Toyota dealer to drop my girlfriend's Tacoma for service and asked about this issue. I was told the dealers first heard about it the same way we did! Through the news! They are NOT prepared at all to deal with this. So, she removed her mats and now is waiting for the recall notice from Toyota. Oh my! :(

Don't be too sure about that. The way they do business it would not surprise me if there wasn't some other problem causing the sudden acceleration and they decided that they could get everyone to replace their floormat and sign a bunch of paperwork to confirm they had it done and they would bury some "We are not reaponsible for any further loss of control claims when you sign this document." type of legalese in there.

In all seriousness- if you base your buying decisions on recalls, who would you turn to? And ya I know Toyota had a recall on their Lexi for bad fuel lines-however it looked like they realized the issue and moved on it fast. The floormats is a non-starter. It's only getting press because of the numbers involved. Toyota also has a current recall because they didn't put the GVWR label on the b-pillar. That one will surely be the end of Toyota.

I asked some non-car people what they thought of this recall and I basically got a shrug. I don't own a Toyota, but I have in the past. I thought they treated me pretty fairly-at least as fairly as any other make has treated me. I don't see what makes them 'dirty' aside from buy American jingoism. Now I hate Priuses with a passion, but otherwise Toyota seems to make reasonably solid cars with zero passion-they are commuting appliances.

*edit* Captain Awesome, I don't think they could make a release like that and have it hold up. It's been litigated many times that you can't really create a full release from all negligence of any kind.

RECALL: Floor mat, not car. $2 worth of rubber and plastic fibers. They say "take out the floor mat". Still the #1 C4C seller.

Whoever the hell designed this pedal needs to be fired. Of course the floor mat's going to catch it, it's so freaking low. What the hell kind of a design is that?

There's a good 2-3 inches of clearance between the pedal and the carpet in our GMs.

"buy American jingoism" is a large part of why I dislike them...but this makes me dislike them no more than it makes me dislike Audi, or Nissan.

They warp statistics...like this "recall"...I won't be surprised if records indicate in a year that it was a service bulletin or something. They tend to place all the blame on the consumer, like when they refused to honor warranties on any truck with a plow attached to it (the trucks were...."insufficiently built" for such a duty, and caused headaches). They fudge information for court-records (I'll see if I can find the link...). They misrepresent the Prius...they've managed to fool people into what a "green" car it is (the fact of the matter is that fueling a Hummer for ten years would be cleaner!!). This isn't to say that all other manufacturers are angels born in heaven...but Toyota is especially corrupt. And I hate it that they've managed to come this far despite it.

Moreover, I hate how high of a pedestal "professional reviewers", and people in general place them -- it's irrational, and it's underhanded. See: Consumer Reports.

Dont forget the sludge issue to which the lost a class action lawsuit...before they would acknowledge it was their fault. I bet the people still buy toyotas off word of mouth still.
