its a safety issue. Say you turn everything off, then your buddy jumps in the car and doesnt realize you've turned everything off...So for safety reasons it will always default back to on.

Then you are doing something wrong. It makes no sense that GM would program some cars one way and the others another way. Go out and try it again is what I recommend. Instead of pressing the button, just push and hold it for 7 secs until the dash lights up. My guess is you are pressing it, then holding it after you have pressed and released.
