Thanks guys I just found this thread.
I was going to install my second coolant temp sensor in 2 weeks till I read this. Time to break out my HP Tuners software
Then put my stock thermostat back in when I do my cam swap in a couple of months.

160 t-stat bad for the motor - complete BS. Car runs about 176-180 with a 160 stat. Completely fine for these aluminum motor's.

If there was an issue I would have 100's of bad motors coming in from putting 160 stats in there cars 8-10 years ago.

I've had my 160* T-Stat in my car for about 2 months and the car runs between 182* and 192* normally and gets as high as 210* when idling. I haven't had 1 problem since installing it...

We have sold literally thousands 160 T-stats for LSX motors..and I run them in my own cars. If you have issues, make sure you have all the air out the system.

...make sure you purged all the air out of the system after the t-stat install...this can cause all sorts of problems.

Your entitled to your opinion, and I respect that but here are a few facts to chew on.

Combustion temps have a direct affect on power Production, a cold combustion chamber does not burn correctly and hinders performance and fuel economy

Most all of the engine wear occurs on Warm up, the longer it takes to warm up the more the wear.

The longer an engine takes to warm up the more gas it burns.

It also takes longer for the LT fuel Trims to come on line or go into closed loop.

Engine Oil Temp Follows Water Temp, and needs to be at operating temp to work properly 210 is desirable.

Making an engine run cold so you can get a couple more degrees of timing in on the dyno will just be pulled on the street.

The engine Block Main Bearing Clearances are Very Tight on a cold engine and open up to normal at 195 degrees.

With Proper fan settings we have no problem keeping water temps at 195 with the stock 192 stat.

We have seen 2 RWHP gain at 195 vs 185 water temps so where is the advantage?

I am all Ears.

Ted.

Opinions is what makes the internet fun.

Engine still warms up quickly with the lower temp stat because it's closed.
The above controls the fuel trims- if tuned properly this wouldn't matter but most people live off them.
GM does run the 192 t-stat for emissions, hotter the engine, cleaner it burns.
Oil temp does follow and heat exchanger tries to maintain it.Temp with the t-stat still hit's the range which will dictate the lower end engine temp -ie bearings ect.
BUT- why does GM run a big cooler on the Z06's? Most Z06's will run oil temp in the 140's all the time... HMMMM

For power, the 160 t-stat will cool the motor quicker than the 192 because it opens earlier. You see this very good while aggressive driving or more in a road race situation. The dyno could bring it out too.My car hit 240 degree's when stock, now it goes to 210 on full load pulls. From our testing the cars do make more hp/tq doing a pull at 185 degree's than 205 degree's.

Discuss.
