The CD #"s... or are they just speculation? I remember reading that 5th gen had some drag issues due to the sunken grill, so I'm surprised the CD #'s came out so well.

That's not too bad.

With the 4th gen at about 350HP and .33 CoD and a top speed of about 160 MPH, we could see the 5th gen at about 170 MPH in 5th gear with an extra 600 RPMs of engine power...

there isn't any "one" CD for the 2nd gen.......it depends on which year -- and, in the early cars -- an RS or regular - and with or without spoilers -- each time the front changes (and the rear, for that matter -- drag --) the CD changes.

A lot of time was spent on the 5thgen -- we tried to keep it as close as possible to the concept -- but we also spent time in the wind tunnel to get the numbers lower.

The wind tunnel also allows you to 'tune' things such as mirrors and door handles - to 'quiet' the car down -- no one wants to listen to turbulence around the window seals.....

I think people are going to be surprised as to how 'upscale' and 'refined' this car feels and performs...make no mistake -- we didn't take it's performance away -- we just made the car more livable.........

Unless I'm much mistaken, the third gen was about .37 - this was probably due in part to the headlamp pockets.

4th gens were capable of higher speed then 160. ive taken my z28 to 153 and i had lots of room in 5th gear left. i just didnt feel comfortable taking it any higher givin the road conditions.

So, trying to get a handle on this and make some sense... I realize that the CD being low is a good thing... But, I understand that seeing a .7 to over 1.0 on an F1 would be necessary as well. Sure, we all like to get from 0 - infinity as fast as possible but there are plenty of us that like to drive as fast as we can and still feel that the car is going to stay on the ground.

So, is there a trade off on this if you have a lower CD?

There are 2 reasons why a car would have a higher CoD: 1) trading for downforce; 2) the thing is shaped like a brick.

The first is true for the Z06 and F1 cars, among others. The second is the case for the Camaro and the Challenger. Sure they develop some downforce but if they slicked everything back it wouldn't drop much, unlike the Z06 (.34->~.27).

As far as downforce, some of it is for high speed stability, but primarily it is important in high speed cornering. Whenever anyone does any sort of speed run, they make the car as aerodynamic as possible. There is usually enough downforce at max speed to keep the car on the ground (not always though). Might not feel safe, but it will be.
