No but I doubt the passenger said "hey man slow down"...impossible to tell but, you know, you get into a sports car with someone, it's your responsibility. I don't ride with people I don't trust. I don't get in my friends RX-8 because he can't drive for crap.

I'm just saying, it's still your responsibility. Now, someone coming down the road, yeah obviously not a situation they wanted to be a part of.

But the bottom line is still, we can pretend like we can prevent people from dying, but we can't. The only way to guarantee you don't die from something preventable is to live in a sealed bubble.

But there is no point then.

People don't even have to be doing something wrong for cars to turn deadly.
Man you need to get a little education, there is a big difference between someone dying in an ACCIDENT doing the speed limit and someone driving like an ASS at 140 and losing control of their car... it's stupidity in the first degree...The likelyhood of dying in a wreck wearing your seat belt at legal speeds is far far less than doing 100+MPH and having a wreck..not to mention the likelyhood of having a wreck in the first place goes up the faster you go....Your car's Safety equipment only can help so much...

You have to be careful about high speeds. I've never driven 140 mph, and the only times i've gone anywhere close to that speed was Long , Straight , Open Interstate, with no cars ahead or behind for miles. It's nice to have a car that's capable, and flex it a bit, but Personally i don't think i'd ever go 140.

You need to not completely miss the point.

But even missing the point, you are still wrong.

first off the amount of time you drive the speed limit vs. the amount of time you drive TWICE the speed limit (the speed limit probably wasn't 70 on a backroad btw) means that if you die in a car crash it is much more likely you will do so at "normal" speeds. Not to mention I don't have the stats on-hand and I'm sure it varies by area but more accidents are caused by improper driving (going to slow is a BIG one) than by speed, so you are wrong on a probability standpoint and a factual standpoint.

Not that it matters because you still miss the point that if I want to strap a fricken rocket to my Camaro and fire it off a cliff your job is to butt out unless the bottom of that cliff is a populated area. And if someone wants to get in ye olde rocket car of stupidity and certain death, by god strap us both in because either a) We are mature adults capable of making decisions for OURSELVES, or b) We are incredibly stupid and or lack of presence in the gene pool will be appreciated by the rest of the swimmers.

It's just rude (and insanely bad form) to start a reply with "you need to educate yourself"...thats how rude people and young people behave.

btw, look into the number of accidents (including people servicing broken down vehicles on the side of the road and being hit) caused by improper or insufficient maintenance. In those cases the more you drive, regardless of speed, the more likely you are to have an accident. Which is almost as true for a well maintained car. the more you drive, the more exposure, the more exposure the higher the odds.

Danger is unavoidable, lead a happy and good life while you're hear and you will have less to complain about when you are not.

No, I got your point, it's just faulty logic. The one reasonable nugget, that driving faster is more dangerous isn't that plainly obvious as for instance there is very little difference in risk in this car between 60 and 70. And as for doubling the speed limit, again, nobody is arguing it's not stupid. The point wasn't that he caught a bad break and usually it's perfectly safe. The point was he was an adult, perfectly capable of making his own decisions, as was his passenger.

And he made a bad one.

Suggesting we prevent people from making bad decisions is something that only people who cannot take care of themselves will be OK with.

Let it inspire you to be a smarter/better driver. It's sad as hell that he died, but use this as a cautionary tale. Maybe something can be gained from an otherwise outright loss.

Just have look at them and remember one thing. Driving is not a joke. it is the single most dangerous thing the average person does, and they do it all the time.

NEVER stop respecting the speed with which it can kill you and you will be a lot safer for yourself and everyone around you.

Speed is fine, within intelligent reasons and contexts.

But that fear you have, it's good, chances are this guy didn't have it. When you put your foot down you'll probably think about this guy and it might just save your life.
