They are not producing these cars. Plain and simple.

"GM doesn't have plans to produce limited volumes of either of these. Instead, they're intended to show enthusiasts what's possible with GM Performance Parts accessories and some serious elbow grease."

You may be able to buy a lot of the parts and accessories shown, but the cars. So the comparisons between the SSx and the Z28 are meaningless.

how many viper acr-x were sold? how many fr500 mustangs sold? obviously this is not the bread and butter but ill just tell you in the SCCA there is a class for just fr500 mustangs. there is a market for track cars. just because your not in that market, doesnt mean its doesnt exist.....

and what would you rather have...some os something or all of nothing ???/

Case in point on roll cages for the street: Jeep Wrangler. It is legal.

Roll cages are not illegal on the street, but a car with an aftermarket cage may make your insurance company raise your rates or drop you. You will likely need to move up to a different type of coverage.

Caging a car has a big cascading effect with other parts too...seats, seatbelts vs harness, being unhelmeted with a cage, seat-backs fastened to the roll cage, etc. I'm about to cage my 68 Camaro (track days and street) because its especially stupid to track a tin can...but it comes with a lot of baggage.

The Wrangler doesn't have a roll cage, its just a roll bar. An actual roll cage is much stronger and more elaborate than the simple overhead hoop you see on Wranglers. Most people who take their Jeeps off road a lot have build a full cage for their rig because the bar doesn't offer a whole lot of protection.

wrangler " roll cages" are made to crumple. their not the same as a roll cage for a race car.

This is a pretty interesting discussion. There are some grey areas for sure concerning the legality of producing this car "for off road use only" etc.

This is kind of tangent, but anyone know if the Z28 will be in the new Gran Turismo 5? Maybe long shot I know. But it peaked my interest because the SSX received the Gran Turismo SEMA "Best Domestic" Award. Got me thinking.

Read below (cited from Playstation Blog):

"The Gran Turismo Awards at SEMA recognizes the best vehicles in five different categories: Best Hot Rod, Best Asian Import, Best European Import, Best Domestic Automobile, and Best Truck/SUV. After the five category winners are judged, one winner from each category is selected on performance and style by leading automotive media. From there, it falls to Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi to select the overall GT Awards “Best in Show” winner. Walking the show floor, Kazunori-san views each of the category winners and selects a vehicle that best represents the Gran Turismo brand; one that will be immortalized as a fully playable part of the Gran Turismo franchise for millions of fans around the world."

Man, we are going to have to find out which car got the ultimate prize!

So, no, I doubt this car will be in GT5, as the NEW release date is 11/24. BUT who knows, I bet whichever car gets immortalized will be downloadable content. If the Z28 is not in GT5, I assume it will be DC as well!

The car being immortalized in Gran Turismo 5 is Mark Stielow's 1969 Camaro, Red Devil. LS9 powered beast.

EDIT: I'm wrong...Stielow's car won the award at SEMA this year, but it looks like his car is going into Gran Turismo 6.

i say the ssx takes a z28 hands down. no contest.
You know, you're right. I didn't read what the total power rating was...I had assumed it was something like 480...couple that overlooked fact to the much weight reduction, I'm sure the SSX could take a Z28.

That said...I'm not sure I'd want to have to drive one. hehehe, I'll take my convenience features and comfort of a Z28.

I'm not sure. This car is a peripheral, stripped racecar variant. The Z28 in the first generation was a well-equipped track car, and for almost two generations it was simply the fastest Camaro they could produce.
