I didn't because I don't always check the original date of the thread. I see it bolded on my list of threads (which indicates a currently active thread) and I open it/read it/respond (or not). I don't know why people dig down into four year old archives and resurrect these old threads... but they do. Then someone like me comes along thinking it is a current conversation, only to find I am perpetuating the problem - unintentionally. My apologies to all.

Results from using the 'search' function, which is another of those things people get scolded for not doing, like reading the owners manual.

One of those "darned if you do, darned if you don't" things.

However, this is still relevant conversation as many Camaros are sitting on used car lots. Many of those with empty glove boxes...read=no owner's manual.

Definitely. One of the first things I did when I got my Camaro. Very easy to use and it.

Nice old thread.

I'm going to be one of those that damn the owner's manual as weak sauce masquerading as good tech info.

A GM document that tells you what GM wants you to know and only what GM wants you to know, in the way GM wants you to know it. It's not exactly a technical manual.

Competitive Driving Mode, page 9-44...and then there's "Competitive Driving Mode (SS Only)" on page 9-45.

One brief paragraph of description on page 9-44 on a highly sophisticated system. One paragraph followed up by a warning. Then on 9-45, another brief paragraph. Neither describes how the two versions really relate except to say that one is specific to a certain model. So that means the ZL1 system is the same as the LS system? I'm guessing not.

In fact the SS version on 9-45 is more of a teaser. Doesn't really say how it does what it does. Sort of describes the outcome in general terms by touting the features. reads like a book jacket ad.

Owner's manuals are written to give warm fuzzies and basic info. If a person wants a better description, I think it's natural to ask.

Chris, the Owner's Manual is at least a starting point, and reading it might have even led to his asking specific questions.

Never mind that OP was posting from work (he actually admitted this, and I think it works out to have been a Tuesday morning); in this instant-information age it's just too important to get immediate answers than have a little patience. And it's better to be getting paid while you're asking than it is to waste any personal time. [/sarcasm as if it wasn't obvious]

Sure. But then again, reading the manual wasn't really my point

The manuals have always sucked. All car makers pretty much are guilty of this. I can completely understand why people don't look at them. I'm used to digging through badly written tech info and squeezing out the needed data. Average owner isn't. The reason folks don't read it is human nature on many levels but a big one is "why bother? It makes little sense anyway".

Somebody will pipe up with "it makes perfect sense". No, sorry. The manual assumes you know things already, which by definition makes them less than perfectly sensible. Example: terms like "Uplevel". That's a classic sin in manuals and documentation. Instead of using the terms that are used to sell the car to the owner, the manual cites different terms entirely. I referred to my manual last week to replace some bulbs. Instructions are poor for an easy procedure.

We are so used to this, and being car guys, we sort of know how to fumble through. But that's our learned knowledge filling in the gaps, not a good manual.

It seems that no one really knows for sure what competitive mode does. The manual gives a very generic description of it's purpose, which is why people are now debating the usefulness of the manual. I have searched this forum and read every single topic devoted to "competitive mode" and all I've learned is that you're not supposed to use it when at the drag strip.

What exactly does it do? Does it deactivate traction control, or stabilitrak? Does it just reduce the effectiveness of them? No one seems to know.

Pretty simple, it allows more tire spin while still minimizing sideways movement.

In simplest form, (I believe) Traction Control reduces tire spin by reducing engine power, fuel and timing.

Stabilitrak is a system that applies braking to the wheel spinning faster to prevent oversteer, or in competitive mode, minimize it.

Who told me this? Umm... just about every topic on launching in the drag racing section of this forum. And launch control is a good way to break an axle at the drag strip. If you don't believe it, try reading "something somewhere"...lol
