I don't think so. It's flush with the top of the hood.

Purely cosmetic.

In fact, here's a quote from Tom Peters, a designer of the ZR1.

"Well, we wanted the car to be distinctive, yes. We wanted to make it different -- but not different for different's sake. When you look at the ZR1, you can see that this car was obviously designed to perform at a higher level. So we wanted it to convey that this is your alpha dog, if you will, because this is the one that's not going to be shy about capability. So that's when we got into exposure of the supercharger -- the idea of having the window in the hood, to showcase the most powerful Corvette engine ever. And we wanted to say, "Hey, this car isn't about hiding what it's capable of doing." This is meant to be an aggressive statement.

Heck, they even have an engine cover as well. So, an engine cover and a clear window. It's cosmetic. Plain and simple.

I heard they had this guy named Ssooch on the manufacturing line that was very busy poking out the mail slots on the SS line. I know there's a picture of it somewhere!

I feel exactly the opposite, the mailslot is a oddity, a useless eyesore that ruins the flow of the hood. If i had the SS I would still rather have the frontend of the V6 model just because of the mailslot or I should say "Lack of" the mailslot.

For those that are against the "mail slot", you can go with the 2010-11 Camaro V8 Front Fascia Close-Out Panel from SLP... only $150 plus paint
