Where does the mail slot come from?

I don’t know if this has been discussed before and it may very well be a stupid question but here goes. Where does the mail slot on the front of the Camaro come from? What is its significance? The Camaro design of today is supposed to be heavily influenced by previous generations and I think they did a wonderful job, but where did the mail slot on the new design come from? Was there a specific generation or year that had one that I am not remembering (I have owned 5 Camaros and don’t remember any of them having mail slots)? As far as I know it is not functional on the current Camaro. Is it just a design affect or did it come from somewhere? Like I said, this may be a stupid question (I am good for a couple of those a day) but I have never understood where it came from. Just something I have thought about from time to time. Does anyone have any ideas or knowledge on this? Thanks.

It is only found in V8 models....The V6 does not have the "Mailslot" I can only hope the redesign will exclude the nonfunctional ornament. The SS has great power and sound. The V6 is practical and a very fast car in it's own right. I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say...." GM , please do not mess with this awesome design too much...You have created a superb vehicle with great engine and pkg combination's."

If you look back at the Concept Camaro the mail slot was original supposed to be the inlet for the engines air intake. When they decide to go in a different direction they just left it there.

It has always reminded me of KIT also.

I guess them taking it from the vett is logical. The tail lights seem to be more vett than vintage camaro to me.

It would be cool to see a US Postal service camaro. Just slip your mail in the slot on the hood and then your mail would actually get there on time.

USPS employees have enough anger issues as it is. They're already issued Uzis upon being hired, and you want them to give them 400 or more horsepower to go postal with, too?

I don't know why it's there ,but it is the one thing I could do without. Well, and also the fake vents on the fenders too...

It's from a box labled "fake scoop crap" some GM engineers found in a scrap heep that Ford had thrown out when they redesigned the Mustang.

I think his point is they're fake - nostalgic or not, what’s the use.

I’d prefer my Camaro without any fake scoops too. My stepdad and I always rib each other – he’s a Ford guy, I’m a Chevy guy. He says SS stands for Simulated Scoops – funny but it drives me nuts.
