Hellooooooo, AL GORE! I think he invented the metric system too. I'm surprised the officer caught up to this guy. By the time the cop gets up to 100 the camaro would be easily 1.5 miles away

All I have to say is... there are plenty of people on here, myself included, who have gone twice the speed limit before. This poor guy just got caught.
Glass houses, people...

The future lies in the metric system.

I've never understood the "as long no one was around/as long as no one got hurt" mentality. Nobody that has died or killed someone in a speed-related accident assumed that wasn't going to be the case. That's why you have to keep stuff like this off the streets. WAY too many variables when driving on public roads as opposed to a controlled environment like a track.
Good friend of mine in high school was killed while driving 100 on a freshly-paved road. Fine road conditions, fairly skilled driver, but a deer jumped out onto the road. People say it's fine as long as no one gets hurt, but the truth is nobody knows that until after the fact. Not for a track, but on a public road that's pretty damn fast. |

The cop, out there in what has been described on this forum as a barren no-mans-land all alone and bored, should have let him go with a warning...the guy in the Camaro got there to talk to him and keep him company just as fast as he could!
And can you just imagine the poor guy in the SS's reaction to seeing a cop on what should have been a deserted stretch of highway? We have all had our hearts stop and or go up into our throats before for 5-10 over...can you imagine at 80+ over?

There are very little tracks where you can get to the top speed of a car. The Ring in Germany would be one of them...
As for the guy doing double the speed limit... a bit crazy on his behalf, but I guess none of us was there to judge the conditions. That being said, I floored all of my cars in Germany (except the Camaro not yet), on the unlimited Autobahns there, so I do understand it's kind of addictive... Won't mention the highest top speed I've gone at though, as you'll probably all call me nuts

If you're in the middle of nowhere; with no cars, houses, or people around; with good pavement; it's not much different than being at the track. You take the same chances. Yes, I understand a track has an EMTs nearby, so it's not quite as risky there. But it's always a risk at that speed. Especially since at some tracks the other driver could cross into your lane an involve you. That can't happen in the case above. People need to live a little and accept another's choice to do so. PS I didn't mean to single you out, Nester. There are plenty of members who share your opinion. Your example just provided me with a good counter-example.

Thats what I was thinking too. In Ontario the cops are not allowed to pursue if your going that fast becasue its too dangerous. This guy screwed up twice. 1 going that fast and 2 slowing down for the cop. |

Has no one heard of ORR - Open Road Racing? They close off a stretch of highway (like those middle of nowhere stretches in Sask. or Wyoming or Montana) and the participants simply haul ass. The idea is to go as fast as possible. You CAN go as fast as you ever dreamed of in your car in ORR. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Road_Racing
You still stand the chance of hitting a deer or having a blowout, but it's under controlled conditions and best of all, LEGAL. |
