Like others have said, as the time inches closer and closer to buy the ZL1, I will admit I have thought about getting another sports car with similar performance in the used car market. It is very difficult to justify $60k for a camaro because no matter how AWESOME the ZL1 is on paper and in the reviews we all have read, and no matter how much "PERMA-GRIN" it brings it's lucky few owners, it will still be a CAMARO at the end of the day. That means you can kiss the luxury feel goodbye if that is something you desire (personally the ZL1 is at my bare minimum for luxury feel ), but the performance should be enough to outweigh the lack of luxury for me right now. Personally, I have always wanted one of the newer camaros and I'm used to looking at cars like M3's and Corvettes, so performance is at the top of my list, thus the ZL1 makes sense to me versus going with an SS. The only car that I would really want right now more than the ZL1 would be a GTR, but sadly, all the GTR's I have found are over $65k still and right now the ZL1's price is the MOST I would want to spend on a car without screwing over the rest of my finances and I'm a married 27 year old cat who just jumped into the $100k+ annual income range.

Here's where I was at before making the decision on the 2013 ZL1 convertible:

2002 Ferrari 360 coupe
2003 Porsche 911TT coupe
2007 Jaguar XKR conv
2009 Corvette ZR1
2012 Challenger SRT8 392

Any one of these I can pay cash for. I'm no where near a 1%er. My wife and I have good paying jobs and we have invested well. No mortgage and no children help as well.

I've been criticized for paying $60K for my Vette so I'm ready for the flak in paying over $60K for a Camaro.

You only go around the big blue marble once so you make the best of the hand you're dealt. I grew up in a single parent household in a trailer park. Now in my 50's, I've earned the pleasure of dropping coin on a wicked ride.

I see no difference in buying a ZL1 or an LTZ model of the Tahoe, Suburban, or Avalanche. They are all $50K-$60K. There are thousands of them on the streets and no one is saying, "Wow, they spent $xx for that?!"

Hell, I know people who've spent more on Harleys, albeit on two Harleys.

This is one of the best points in this thread. There are tons of SUV's on the road and no one blinks an eye at the cost. But bring home an amazing car such as the ZL1 and you get the questions.

I am in the same boat here as most, I have never paid this much for a car. I was raised in a penny pinching household, and learned the value of a dollar very young. Now, in my early thirties, I have worked hard and saved. My wife and I have great jobs and we feel that it's time to enjoy what we work hard for.

Has the shock hit anyone?

No, But it will when it's sitting in my driveway and I get to stand back and say it's mine.

Price will be the last thing on my mind. I would have never pulled the trigger if I had to question the price.

50-60k for a car that is more than most can handle and will scare the shit out of them is an absolute bargain.
Why have sticker shock with that?
Seriously, money is an abstract and the ZL1 is tipped in your favour, very rare thing.

Think of it this way .... $60k for a turnkey Camaro thats supercharged with state of the art suspension system, bigger wider performance rims/tires, GFX package, and additional limited features attached to a ZL1, all complete with full warranty! -just order up your choice of color.

This is a deal when one wants "beyond the ordinary" in a Camaro.

I also have close to that with my 2SS/RS with complete Livernois Performance package. Just yet to install a GFX kit and higher performance rims/tires, with thoughts of improving my suspension more. I'm to deep to quit, won't get any return value if decided to sell to get a ZL1

This is same mindset on getting a Harley. In 2008 I ordered a Screaming Eagle Roadking. Yup this sucker was $32k fully loaded, fully chromed, and with the big 110 motor. Ordering the traditional Roadking, then adding power mods, equal amount of chrome would have been close to Screaming Eagle Edition.

However, should I want to sell my Screaming Eagle RK, the value is greater since factory limited edition bike vs someone self building a similar bike.

to me, the ZL1 falls into the same situation, and had it been avail 2 years ago to order, I also would have bought it!

In fact, it will edge out our new 3500 truck in price so the zl1 will be the most expensive car we have ever purchased. (Before people start saying you gotta pay to play, I already know this. It’s not that I can’t afford the car, it’s the fact the car is a lot of money to be spending on, well, a car)
I am not necessarily a Camaro enthusiast more than a GM enthusiast, so it might hit me differently than some of the people who live and breathe Camaro,* but reality keeps settling in when our friends keep saying “what?! 60K for a Camaro? You can buy a BMW or a Mercedes for that. Heck you can even get a slightly used 911 for that” Then I have to go into my normal spiel about the technology in the suspension and the power and blah blah. It gets old let me tell you.
I guess it is still a perception (and a fact) that the Camaro is an affordable sports/muscle/GT car so it takes people back when they find out how much we are paying.* I think I am just going to start saying I am paying “slightly more than what our SS cost” That might be better.

So, Just curious if anyone else may be experiencing this type of situation?
Yes. In fact, since I placed my order there've been numerous "what the hell am I doing?" moments...Just like you, there are literally DOZENS of what some might consider "higher class" cars out there we could be getting. A new Porsche Cayman had my eye for a little bit...or a Crew-cab 1500 AND a new Caddy ATS....

Buuuutt....The ZL1 a supercar. And a bargain for what it offers, as well!! I say: to the Mustang scrapyard with what other people percieve...because they just don't know.

After VIR - I haven't had a single one of these thoughts, and if your co-workers/friends can't get over it once you have it...take them for a "spirited ride". I'll bet they'll keep their comments to themselves afterward.

LOL...Over 50 posts justifying the cost of a big boy toy.

You may convince youself your friends your wife...ect but 60G's is a LOT of money for a toy.....I'm betting most could/should be doing somthing better with the money to move their family forward.

Having said that, I want one too.

What better way to move your family FORWARD than a wicked-fast 580hp Camaro?

You can buy a brand new base 2012 Corvette Coupe from Kerbeck Chevy for $40K and change after rebates. I love my SS (Listed for $32K new) but think I would like a Vette if I was going to spend over $40K (Stock numbers G12385 and G12439). Corvettes won't door ding either. Just me.
