Motor Trend says that the Turbo 4 in the Kappa twins will make 300hp next year so I don’t think that there is much point in giving the Camaro will get that engine and a DI 3.6.

On the V8 front how about this:

SS w/ Auto gets either a 6.0 or 6.2 (L76 @ 361hp or L98 @403hp) with AFM. (Note: I am saying GM will choose one of these two to offer)

SS w/ a Stick gets the same motor as the auto but without AFM. Since it can’t have AFM, it could get some extra ponies from a higher lift, non-AFM cam. Maybe up to 400 for the 6.0 or 435 from the 6.2 (like the non-AFM LS2 & LS3 have).

Unless the rules have changed since 06, the non-AFM SS might still escape the gas-guzzler tax since the (hopefully) heavier LS2 powered GTO did when equipped with a six speed manual.

And of course the snake eater gets a S/C small block.

Targeting 550 horsepower (410 kW) and 550 lb.-ft. of torque (745 Nm) – final SAE certified power levels will be available in early April 2008 – the CTS-V’s new LSA engine will be the most powerful ever offered in Cadillac’s nearly 106-year history. It is based on GM’s legendary small-block V-8 architecture and features an intercooled supercharger system, premium heat-resistant aluminum-alloy cylinder heads and numerous details designed to ensure the LSA makes its power as quietly and smoothly as possible.
thats close to what C&D said. I hope we get the LSA as the top engine. The LS9 does have too much expensive stuff in it like titanium and other stuff, so hopefully the LSA is ours!!!

No matter what is said I don't think that it is likely to get two engine options in one trim level...it just makes no sense.

SS with Auto gets L76 and AFM...
SS with Man. gets LS3 and no AFM...

That just doesn't make any sense...Additionally, GM can't afford to offer the 'base' V8 without a manual...too many people would be pissed. For instance, I know that I don't want an auto...but I won't be able to afford the 'top-level' V8. So, I forget who said it...(and I don't feel like looking for it in this thread...I know, I'm lazy)...but I think the better bet is that if the LS3 is the 'base' V8 they will offer AFM with LS3s equipped with automatics (if this is is possible)...and no AFM with LS3s equipped with manuals.

**just a thought that came to me right now...which I'm sure people have brought up before but I'll reiterate it** C4 Corvettes were equipped with LT1s before the 4th Gen Camaro ever got it, right?? And C5 Corvettes got the LS1 before the Camaro received a detuned version of the LS1, right??? I know that we've been told to "forget everything" we know about engines...but I don't know...the C6 recently received the LS3...so it doesn't seem too far off to think that 5th Gen will get the LS3 as the 'base' V8. Anyway...I'm ready for more info ...haha...but really, I'm remaining cool about it

This ^^^^^ is just food for thought...

This is exactly the point I was trying to make. I think that GM will put the same small block in the SS no matter which transmission you choose. The only diference will be AFM and hopefully the cam. I just don't pretend to know if it will be a 6.0 or a 6.2. I just hope that the non-AFM engine will get a non-AFM cam so that it can make a little more power.

But you've got me thinking, a non-AFM 6.0 and an AMF 6.2 make about the same power. So maybe GM will resurrect (and maybe update) the LS2 for the Manual and put an AFM encumbered LS3 in the Auto, both making just oveer 400hp. Just a thought, it would probably make more sense to fix AFM so it stops sucking power.

I think someone here said that the problem is that it necessitates a torque converter because without one, AFM is rough and is felt changing modes...

Yes, I believe it's about transitional smoothness when going from 8 to 4cyl and back. If someone with GM knows for sure, let them speak now, please.

Also, there are more than a few Pontiac G8 GT (L76 with 6 speed auto) owners not happy with the slight vibration felt in 4cyl. mode. Others say they can't tell when it changes.

A couple of tuners I looked at will disable AFM and then reflash the computer to make it semi-permanent.

On the other hand, I've seen more than a few G8 owners raving about their highway fuel mileage. Like around 25 mpg hwy and it goes 0-60mph in 5.3 sec! A small Kia only gets 32 hwy mpg...

Anytime I mention the G8 it's because it can be an informational source on the new Camaro. Like the G8 GT weighs 3995 lbs. I guessed the Camaro would be less than that.

New Info Brings Revised Guess:

Entry level - 260hp 3.6L DOHC V6, w/AFM

Z28 - L76 V8 Automatic Trans, w/AFM

Z28 - LS3 V8 Manual 6-speed Tremec, no AFM

SS model - LSA V8 Auto or manual trans, no AFM 550hp

Turbo 4cyl 2.0L only if gas prices regulary hit $4.00 gallon this summer on the East Coast

Again...I've got to say...it is more likely that there will only be 1 V8 option in the 'base' level V8 (whether it's the Z28 or SS)...I believe that it's more likely GM will develop AFM for the LS3 mated to an auto. We know that AFM isn't currently on the LS3...but that doesn't mean it can't, or won't, happen. That is all...time for bed
